Update to Did I Do the Right Thing....

I just checked my text messages  which will be expensive as hell because I'm roaming international. I got one from the mutual friend last night saying she needed to know within an hour if she was sending money to the roomate on my behalf. Then another text from the roomate saying thank you she was able to get the medicine and how nice it was to be able to count on me after all of these years.  What the hell?

What do I do when I get back? I NEVER said I'd send the mutual friend money, I never really committed period.

I'm kind of leaning toward deleting both from my FB but now they have my phone number. Stuff like this doesn't happen to me!

On a health note I am happy to be laying over by the river in Calgary and will be going for a 10 mile run as soon as my blood pressure drops.

Re: Update to Did I Do the Right Thing....

  • Maybe they're conspiring together???

    What a weird situation.

Have a good run, hope it relieves some of your stress!

  • I'm just curious - how much money are we talking about here? $10? $100? $1,000?

Are you close with the mutual friend? It sounds like she might have sent money to the roommate, thinking that you wanted to...

  • "Sorry, the insane barrage of text messages I've gotten has given me second thoughts and I won't be sending anything after all. Please stop contacting me."

Send to mutual friend or ancient-non-friend, your choice.

Can you block the numbers? I have no idea how to do that...

  • That is crazy!  I am so interested to find out what happens.

Has ex-roommate said anything on facebook about having cancer?

  • Contact your bank as soon as you can and tell them you never approved that transaction and change your bank records. Also speak to your mutual friend ASAP and ask her straight up her involvement with this. As an attorney, this is a really, really stupid move for her to have made and she should know better. Something is majorly up.

    I like this.

This whole situation is waaaaaaaaay too sketchy for words. Nobody ever needs money RIGHT NOW VIA WIRE for something legitimate... and especially not for medical treatment. And think about it, if you were in her shoes and if you did (for some unknown reason) need money right this second... would you be contacting someone you hadn't spoken to in a decade to get it?

You need to wash your hands of this whole thing, now.

  • To clarify , I never said a specific amount. During our 1st conversation I mentioned sending a check thinking she had some sort of fund set up at a bank (you know how you see on the news...."to help offset the medical costs a fund has been set up at Wells Fargo....." but she doesn't have anything like that. I NEVER talked with the mutual friend to give her the idea that she could give money and I would repay her. All of this happened while I was in the air!

They do not have any of my banking info. I never sent anything. The inky thing they have is my phone number.

She doesn't have anything about this on her FB page which I would think you would do if you were seriously trying to raise money. She mentioned her friends where she lives did a fund raiser for her. I googled her name and fundraising and the town she lives in and found nothing. But I don't know if she has the same last name as in college. She has been married and divorced. her FB profile is her first and middle name.

Yeah, I think when we land tomorrow I'm going to text both and say leave me out of this.

This. Every single word of this, especially the bolded part.

  • It also sounds like a good time to delete people from FB that you never talk to and really don't have a relationship with any longer.

     The whole thing sounds bizzare.

Yeah definitely. I don't know what's going on here, but it totally isn't legit.

This and I would make a point to tell your mutual friend that you will not be contributing to the fund.
  • This is so so strange. I would definitely block their numbers and I'd be considering changing all my account passwords, including my bank.

  • Something similar happened to a friend of mine.  A fried she hadn't seen in a long time needed money right away for some emergency (said someone had stolen her wallet while on a trip out of the country) and was pleading for people to please wire money asap.  Turned out that the person's Facebook was hacked and it was all a scam. Some people even sent money...

Are you sure you really talked to the 'old friend' and not someone else?  Needing someone to wire money to you right away screams scam to me.

Ths exactly. A friend of mine got scammed out of some money this way. A facebook message from the friend asking for money, and it turned out her account was hacked. Contact your friend another way to check on it, she may not know this message was sent from her account.
