Wilson Island, Great Barrier Reef

You can read my review here but in summary:

  • The food is fantastic, the chef is Italian and cooked in a number of countries around the world. Its amazing what he can do on 2 gas BBQs
  • The tents are simple but luxurious at the same time. We stayed in Serenity and had a great ocean view. We splet with the tent open all night and had a full moon
  • The birds are loud (as per tripadvisor) however DH wore earplugs and had no issues, they only woke me once at 4 am and considering your in their environment I wonder why people complain
  • The snorkling off the beach at low tide is best - white tip reef sharks, sea turtles, multiple schools of fish - I thought Galapogus would have ruined snorkling for us anywhere else but I forgot the power of the GBR
  • The highlight was the baby turtle hatchlings. This is something I always wanted to see but we were visiting at the end of the season so didn't count on it. The first night we saw a small nest make their way to sea, the second night we saw a mother lay her eggs and the final night was fantastic with a large nest of hatchlings come out just next to where we were having sunset drinks. It truely made me feel privilaged to be there
  • DH is NOT a beach person, as in he is very active and I thought we would be streching things, but we were never board. Between eating, snorkling off the beach and spending time on the deck of our tent he said he could easily spend one or two more nights
  • We had a maximum of 10 people with us at any time (12 is the max they take) and we only occasionally saw people while snorkling and then only again at meals it was true isolation
  • The bar is open and you can drop by and help yourself all day and all night. There are snacks between meals but you don't need them
  • If I compare it to our stay on Lord Howe Island (the only other true luxury travel experience we had), I think Lord Howe was better value for money, BUT the isolation and animal experiences you'd struggle to get anywhere else

Re: Wilson Island, Great Barrier Reef

  • I was waiting for this one! So glad that you had a good time. We are so excited to get married there, as it fits exactly what we are looking for- seclusion, quiet, an escape from the world. The turtles are adorable! So glad you got to see them. I did book a heli transfer on the way out to Wilson, so that will help with the seas.

We did look into Lord Howe as well, but since we are going in August, Wilson seemed to be a bit warmer based on climate charts. I am sure I'll enjoy my time in Australia and will want to go back!

The weather will be better on Wilson. Australia is a great country to travel in, very diverse, you can never see everything, even living here!

  • So jealous of the turtles!  DBF got to see them near Bundaberg and I will not rest until I get to see them, too.

So you went from BNE airport to Gladstone to Wilson Island?  Can you explain how you booked/got there?

We flew with Qantas, Syd to Brisbane to Gladstone. There is then a boat transfer from Gladstone to Heron and another boat transfer to Wilson. You can get a helicopter transfer from Gladstone to Heron and that cuts out one boat transfer.
