Vacation First 2 Weeks of New Job

I just completed my second out of a three interview process for a job I really want. I asked in my last interview when the job would begin (because in none of the documentation I was provided did it indicate a date) and they told me July 1. This was a huge disappointment to me because my husband and I have already booked our honeymoon for June 28th-July 15th to Europe. Our flights and hotels week booked months ago and are non refundable/non transferable. I have been teaching for 7 six years and always have the summers off, that's why we planned it during this time. This will be a 12 month administrative job, which is fine, just not ideal because of our travel plans.

I'm mostly concerned because they are hiring 34 people for this position (with hundreds of applicants) and they all will begin the same time and I can imagine there will be orientation and training during those first few weeks that I would be missing. However, the beginning date has not been posted (I had to ask) and they have not stressed any orientation or training dates. Also, the majority of applicants are teachers (with summers off) and would persumably have travel plans during this time, like me. My question is when should I bring this up with the employer?  How likely is it that an employer would make an exception for me?  I still have to wait to see if I will be invited back for the final phase of interviews. But, I am really excited about this job (and honeymoon) and am worried I may have to miss out on one to persue he other.

Any Advice?

  • Cart before horse. You're making a lot of assumptions that may not be true.

IMO you have 2 options here:

    1. At the next interview, tell them that you're going on your HM through 7/15, so your earliest start date would be 7/16. Find out if that will be an issue from a training/orientation perspective

    2. Wait until offered the job, then when they ask for a start date, tell them it's 7/16 due to previous commitments

I'm leaning toward #2. Plenty of people come on here fretting about vacation expected to be taken at/near a start date of a new job. Most employers understand that you have a life, and that can include previous plans made before applying/accepting a job. Most will accommodate

  • If it is a position where everyone has the exact same start date and training, I would mention it durig your next interview.  I would also let them know it is your HM and not just a local vacation.  Personally, I would be cranky if I was interviewing someone who didn't bring this up.  It wastes my and your time if the start date is set in stone.

EDIT: If this were the case, I would be cranky because I went through 3 interviews with someone who knew they couldn't start on the date required.  My time would be wasted b/c I could have been interviewed other people instead. HR isn't my full time responsibility so wasted interviews are really taking away from what I do need to get done.

  • If they have not posted anywhere where you are supposed to start, I would wait until you are made an offer, then bring up the fact that you have other commitments. I do interview a lot of poeple and if I really want certain individual for a position I can wait for their previous commitment to be over. I don't understand why they would be upset!!!

  • Wait until you receive the offer, then suggest a start date of July 16.  This happens all the time - employers have a targeted start date, new employee has other plans.  Most employers are very understanding.
