XP from MM: Has anyone ever used PODS for moving?

I asked over at MM but thought I would ask here as well:

I am going to be moving into an apartment this summer and am not taking everything from our house (I am leaving most of the large furniture with my STBXH and really starting over), and I was thinking that I might like to use the PODS service to pack up and briefly store the stuff I am taking in a storage container in our driveway as a I pack up (provided he is okay with that, which I don't think will be a problem). However, I was looking for any experiences others might have had, as well as any ideas you might have regarding pricing. The reviews online are favorable, for the most part, but I would love to hear from some people I "know."

Re: XP from MM: Has anyone ever used PODS for moving?

  • I haven't personally but my best friends used a POD when they were living with their inlaws. They said it was good but very expensive... way more expensive than a storage spot would have been. Also I don't think they were able to access their stuff.

  • They charge by the month, even if you have it for a shorter period of time. They quoted me $3500 to move a 1 bedroom apartment 1300 miles. No thanks, a uhaul, gas, car trailer and overnight hotel was only going to cost $1800.
  • I am not concerned about storage, as I don't need to store anything. My STBXH is not asking me to move any of my stuff out or anything until I actually move out. For now, I am just setting up a staging area in the basement for my stuff as I pack it up. I really just need it to sit in our current driveway for a few days as I load it up, and then I need them to drive it to my new apartment, where I will be immediately unloading it. If I had to store stuff long term, I definitely would not go this route, however.

Hmmm...if that is the case, then that definitely won't work. Yikes! I would only be moving like 20 miles, and if they are going to charge me a month anyway, I guess that U-Haul is the way to go. Bummer.

  • I second the UHAUL suggestion.

  • I looked into doing this. I was moving, we were selling so I was packing up, but also wanted to "stage" the house, so we didn't want it to look cluttered. The POD was expensive and for the distance I was moving it just didn't make much sense to pay all that money, but then still have to get a uhaul for the stuff I wasn't or couldn't pack ahead of time.

I opted to just get a storage space, pack boxes and move a car load of them over as I went along. Moving was then relatively painless...mostly furniture and then all the boxes from storage.

  • Yes but not PODS, I used ABF U-Pack moving.  http://www.upack.com/  It was just under $3k to move a complete 3BR house with a finished basement 500 miles.  We had 4 giant 'pods' in our driveway for a few days.

  • If you just want something as an extra staging area I would rent a Uhaul for longer. It will probably be significantly cheaper. Some places have regulations against them. A friend wanted to get one but the city said she couldn't park it anywhere except inside a garage. In any case it's almost always more expensive than renting a truck.
