How do you clean your makeup brushes?

Can I clean them with things I'd normally have around the house (IDK, like water and dish soap or water and shampoo) or do I need to buy a special cleaner?

I'm embarrassed to admit that I've only used two brushes in probably the last 10 years, both for the eyes, and I've only rinsed them out with water.  Yeah, gross, I know.

Re: How do you clean your makeup brushes?

  • I use Mac cleanser because it disinfects.  For the deep cleaning, once a week, I use a very gentle soap and tepid water.  I wring out the water by pressing a paper towel to the brush head and lay the brush flat to fully dry.  Do not dry your brush upright or you will crack the wood handle and/ or the glue that holds the brush to the handle will crack.
  • I use Bobbi Brown brush cleanser and lukewarm water.

  • I use a bottle of clarifying shampoo that is too harsh for my hair. I've used hand soap before, but found it didn't get them that clean. The shampoo is a bottle of Paul Mitchell I bought at Ulta and couldn't return. It works great!
  • I normally use a brush cleaning solution, but the last time on the advice of a friend, I used baby shampoo and it worked great, probably once a month though I will use an antiseptic brush solution still although.
  • You can use baby shampoo to clean your brushes.
  • I use Sephora brush cleaner. They actually have 2 kinds, a daily cleaning spray, and a gel version that you suds up with water for deep cleaning.

I use shampoo, dish detergent, or liquid hand soap. Really, it is not rocket science and you do NOT need to spend money on a new product.

  • I use the baby shampoo. It leaves the brushes super soft! I lather it up really good and then rinse to get them super clean.
