Niagara Falls (Canadian Side)

We're thinking about going there for 4 nights.  Any hotel and restaurant recs?  Other than touring the falls, I know there are casinos.  Any other suggestions for things to do?

Thanks!

Re: Niagara Falls (Canadian Side)

  • We really liked the Sterling Inn.  It's a very nice boutique hotel.

My favorite way to view the falls was the cross the border to the American side and wander the trails through the park.  So much more pleasant and peaceful than the craziness on the Canadian side.  The Cave of the Winds is also fun.

If you're going for four nights, I would consider a day trip to Toronto and/or Niagara-on-the-Lake.

  • dh and i stayed at the sterling inn and spa. great hotel. enjoyed it immensely. the wineries near by are good as well and toronto is only about an hour away.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • Definitely do a day trip to Niagara on the Lake. Actually, I'd stay there and just do a day trip to Niagara Falls. The falls are pretty cheesy on the Canadian side. That said, its still a nice weekend getaway.

There are some great wineries - if you do it on your own, its really cheap. Like $5 for the tour, plus $1 per taste or something like that. If you book a group tour from the hotel its more $$ but then you have transportation. Totally up to you what you'd like better.

Depending on the season, there are great markets out - jams, fruits, veggies, etc. Check the border restrictions for what you can and can't back over.

The Shaw Festival at Niagara on the Lake has great shows this year. www.shawfest.com

  • Go to Niagara on the Lake and do wineries!

I stayed at the Hilton and loved it!

  • If you like B&B's, I can recommend Villa Alexandrea.  Although it's been a while since we stayed there for our honeymoon (8 years ago), the place was nice, the owner was kind and helpful, the breakfast was great, and it is within walking distance of the falls, with nice views (not of the falls, but downriver a bit).

We did the Maid of the Mist tour, which is every bit as cheesy as you've heard, and still a lot of fun.  We actually did quite a bit of cheesy touristy stuff and enjoyed it.  But by far the highlight of the trip was Niagara-on-the-Lake.  The wineries were charming, we got bikes (rentals available) and rode to a couple of wineries, got wine and a picnic lunch and ate it by the river.  There are cute boutiques and inns in Niagara-on-the-Lake, too.  We would maybe stay there if we ever went back to the area.

Also, there is a somewhat upscale restaurant called Schimshack's on the US side -- an easy drive -- where Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio dined when she was filming the movie "Niagara."  We thought that was kind of a fun fact, so we went there for dinner.  The views are pretty, and the food was good, as I recall.

We're not into casinos, but we did spend the first night there just walking the strip and seeing the sights.  Very touristy area, but fun for one evening.  All in all, we thought Niagara was a fun place, and the surrounding area was unexpectedly beautiful.  We were there in June, and the weather was fantastic.  Hope you enjoy your trip!

Agreed. We were very disappointed in Niagara Falls, Canada, and wish we had stayed in NOTL. Unless Ripley's Believe it or Not and its clientele is your scene, you don't need to stay right next to the falls. Spend a day or two there (on both sides of the border) to explore the falls, but I'd recommend also using your time in that region to visit some great wineries and do a day trip to Toronto.
