So I've got a stress fracture
and I'm out of running for a few weeks right now. I've been on the stationary bike instead since I don't have a pool really convenient for me. But I think I am going to go to the closest one this weekend so I can get off my butt on the bike!
I'm not much of a swimmer so I don't know the different styles or anything. Any suggestions to make sure I get a good workout still? My dr joked that you get a better workout if you are't the best at it since you have to work harder keep yourself up!
Also, I don't have a swim suit besides my 2 pieces. Would a padded sports bra be fine for a top or do I need to go buy an actual suit? If so, any recs on cheap ones? I don't really want to spend a bunch on one.
Thanks!!
Re: swimmers...wanna help me out?!??
If you're not swimming too hard/doing flip turns, a two-piece is fine for now. I would not swim in a sports bra unless you had something over it - usually they're pretty heavy/ungainly in the water.
If you want a good workout, but you're not much of a swimmer, try taking a deep water jogging type class. If you can do it without flotation, that's great and the best workout, but if you need flotation, they'll provide that for you. I swim semi-competitively on the regular and am a lifeguard, but I can work up a sweat in deep water jogging.
If you'd prefer to swim, I'd check out this site: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=528 They have some great workouts in various lengths.
If you want a cheap 1-piece, I'd get it from swimoutlet.com - they have nylon/poly suits for under $20 and they're a decent deal. Make sure you order a size or two smaller than the website says, though. Swimsuits do stretch and it's better to squeeze into it than constantly be pulling it up.
It sounds like something along the lines of an aqua areobics/zumba class would be great for you.
If you want to go by yourself, I would try start with something simple, like trying to do a flutter kick with a kick board. Focus on keeping your legs straight (try pointing your toes). If you are comforable with that then start working on putting your face in the water / "blowing bubbles" - exhale through your nose so that you don't have water come up your nose. You could try google for some more stroke technique but I would really recommend taking a lesson or two if you want to be swimming laps.
For suits, I'm not a fan of 2 pieces but I guess it would depend on the two piece as to if I would get a new suit. If you remotely think you might fall out of the two piece, I would try buying a "grab bag suit" from one of the online swim outlets. You will specify the size and then they will send you a suit. Swim Outlet will let you specify a brand. I would highly recommend Speedo or TYR. This is the cheapest way I know to get a quality suit.

I have heard of people finding good competition suits at TJ Maxx but the only one I have actually seen was a Nike suit and I would not pay more than $10/$15 for those since Nike suits don't hold up well.
Oh, the easy way to get your suit size is your bra size. So if you are a 36C, I would recommend a size 36 for you. If you are large chested DD+ you might want to go up a size up.
Also, most Speedo / TYR have a similar cut. So if you are nervous about fit, you can try one on at a sporting good store to see if you are happy with the fit. A new suit should be tight.
Thanks for the tips! I remembered I have a 2 piece that fits tighter and I don't think I will have to worry about falling out of it.
And I think I am just going to go and see what happens! I'm sure it will be a workout and maybe I will surprise myself with my undiscovered swimming skills...maybe, maybe not?!?
