So I've spent a lot of time with D's family this past week+, including my many teenage/early 20s nieces. I've noticed, especially at Easter as well as the wake and the funeral, that I am apparently a total prude. These are smart kids, good students, involved in activities, stereotypical "good" girls in every respect. But the clothes. Oy. Short tight dresses. High, high heels. Super short shorts. I feel like such an old lady, but I just want to reach out and pull their little hem lines down. I guess this is just normal nowdays? I swear the "hot" girls in my high school didn't dress so revealingly. God help me if I have a girl. She'll despise me in about 15 years.
Re: Teenage Girls
It makes B irrationally angry. Our factory used to be across the street from a high school. These girls were ?ber-developed and liked to show it. He felt it was like false advertising and that he and his other male workers shouldn't have to feel dirty seeing scantily clad girls walking by not knowing if/that they're really underage. Because they look 25! He never knew if they were high school girls or just regular women.
He says he doesn't know how boys in high school going through puberty concentrate. That at least in the 80's giant sweaters & turtlenecks were the style. And he still was girl crazy but everything at least wasn't all hanging out. He said he would fail out of school these days.
Its not so bad where we live & where the store is at now but I see it in the mall- high school girls in what I would call stripper shoes! With short shorts!
My little cousin makes this one face (not duckface) every time someone takes a picture of her, or more likely, every time she takes a picture of herself. It drives me batshit and I just want to yell STOP OPENING YOUR EYES SO WIDE.
I know she practices it in the mirror.
And yes, with the high heels and the short dresses.

I'm also riding the old prude Rascal, I comment on the prosta-tots at the mall all the time. I expect some degree of revealing clothing from older teens, after all I was guilty of rolling my Catholic school uniform a little short.
But what really bugs me is the younger kids dressing way too old or slutty. There are some articles of clothing that should not come in kids/juniors sizes just as much as they shouldn't come in my plus sizes. God help me when my kid wants to start shopping at Justice.

Each other. Do you all really think teens dress slutty because they want to have lots and lots of sex with boys? Teens dress like each other, and it has very little to do with actual sexual activity. I sometimes can't believe the outfits I wore as a teen and I was the world's biggest prude. I sometimes raise an eyebrow when I see groups of teens all in short shorts or tube tops, but I'm sure other teens don't give it a second thought. It's just the style.
I think it depends on how short is short for me. I intend to let my hypothetical daughter dress in the current styles, but she will not dress like a college student going clubbing when she's a 15yo high school student. She can save that for when she's not living in my house.

I find it annoying that I can't find any decently lengthed shorts for myself! But yes, I have worked with juvenile girls before. No way, nu-uh. I'm going to be mean mom.
I'm all for dressing to impress, I know a lot of it is impressing the other girls but it's completely naive to say that they don't do it for sex at all. Of course they do. Majority of teens nowadays are super sexed up whether they're having it or not.

I think this is incredibly naive. And I wore some questionable stuff back in the day, but I kept it covered for family events.

I'm getting prudey-prude too. When I went to Wicked, there were so many young girls wearing dresses so short that I know they must wax because otherwise you'd see hair. I can't even imagine what they have to do when they sit down because there's not enough fabric to cover them.
Yeah, the girls are choosing these dresses but WTF is up with the clothing manufacturers making everything so goddamn short to begin with? If you're a teenager and want to buy a nice dress, your choices are floor length or a hoochie dress.

I nearly gave up the other day trying to find a dress because everything I tried on was short. It was probably not inappropriate short for a teenager, but it sure as hell was for a 30yo woman that would be chasing a toddler.
This is a hot button topic in our house right now. My SD who is 10 is allowed to dye her hair blonde (it's naturally brown) she has fake fingernails and all of her shirts get tied into a knot in the back to make them as tight as possible. My 13 y/o isn't allowed to have fake fingernails yet, I really don't want her to start dying her hair already and no knot tying in our house. This causes all kinds of issues.
This post made me make this face:
I'm just going to pretend that Gwen is going to let me keep picking out what clothes to buy for her until she graduates HS.

This is a good question.
I was as chunker which led me to lock it up for the most part.
But yeah, I wish Charlotte were a Charlie instead.
For less then ten cents a day, you can feed a hungry child.
Oh trust me I know how you feel. When I was growing up I wanted to wear more revealing clothes, but my mom also told me to cover up. I got used to that and now that I am married, this no reason to wear clothes like that unless he is about to rip them off me
This morning on our walk I saw two girls getting in the car with their dad, presumably to go to school. And I was like, "Where the fucck are their pants?" They had on shorts so short that when they'd put on their slightly baggy sweatshirts because it was a little chilly this morning, you could not see the hemline at all. I only realized they actually had shorts on when they went to sit in the car.
Don't schools have a fuccking dress code? Our shorts and skirts had to be fingertip length. I have long legs, long arms, and a high waist, so sometimes I had a hard time finding shorts that fit the code and a few times I got called into the principal's office because I was dressed inappropriately (in my almost fingertip length shorts) and had to pull the waistband down to my hips and walk aroudn with a drop crotch so I wasn't showing too much thigh.
Aren't there rules? No short shorts, no bras showing, no boobs hanging out, no boy butts hanging out in overly baggy pants, whatever?
I'm working on making my kids giant nerds.
I never post but I couldn't resist this issue -- What blows my mind is teenagers don't have money, yes? Parents have money. So it is the parents who are actually buying the clothes, in support of how the girls are dressing. Sad.
