DITY vs TMO

We've done full DITY moves twice.  However, the last was 4.5 years ago when we were moving out of a 2 bedroom apartment with no kids.  Even that was a lot of work, and at the time I said that I never wanted to do a full DITY again.

We're moving next month.  I thought DH was on board with having the military move us.  However, when he started filling out the paperwork for TMO, he started having second thoughts.  He seems to think it's going to be too much of a hassle to get everything ready for the movers.  I think it would be an even bigger hassle to move ourselves with a 2 year old, an infant, and a 4 bedroom house full of stuff.  I asked him who would physically move everything since my hands are full, and I'm certainly not in physical condition to be doing any heavy lifting just yet.  He says he could get a couple friends to do it.

Is DH as crazy as I think? Or does anyone prefer doing a DITY and think it would be worth the effort?

Re: DITY vs TMO

  • Well, it can be done. Would I choose it? Hellzzzz no.

A family in MH's class did a DITY move with a 2 week old last month. We all pitched in and they made it happen, but I would never have chosen that if I were them.

What does he think you have to do to get ready for the movers? I just do the basics like purging, dusting, and taking pictures off the wall. It's half a day's work.

  • Someone would have to pay me to do a full DITY with a 4 year old, an infant and a 4 bd house.

I'm confused at what he thinks he needs to get ready for the movers? Just take anything off the walls.

  • I've been told that you do not make money off of DITYs anymore or very little. I would do a partial DITY. Best of both worlds.

And I got nagged at by the movers because I took stuff off the walls and out of cabinets. I'm sorry but we left our apartment for good roughly an hour after they left. I had to fix those holes in the wall and clean!

  • Your DH is crazy.  Out of his mind!

We don't have the kids, and we still go with TMO for our moves.  (we live in a four bedroom, so I would guess a similar amount of stuff, although ours might be heavier in books and yarn, seeing as we don't have to fit kids in those rooms...)

He could probably get a couple friends to help on the near end.  What about the far end?  Is he going to magic-up some volunteers to help unload/unpack?

Yeah, I don't think my FI (and I) would have made more than a couple hundred dollars if we had done a DITY. That doesn't even begin to be worth it, to me, and we just had a 2/2 apartment with a cat and dog. With kids, forget about it. We loaded up the pets, perishables, bedding, and some clothes in the cars and let the movers take the rest. I will say that we had excellent packers and movers, I really wish that we could use them next time. They let us borrow tools to take apart the TV stand and the dining nook, which I understand is not something they have to do, but they were just generally great. They got there at 8 and the truck was packed by 1:30. Totally painless.

  • No way would I have done a total PPM last month when we PCS'd.  I was more than happy to have the movers come and for us to take a little bit of stuff in the car.  We did have some damages, but we filed a claim and had a check in hand about a week later.

  • We just did a partial DITY (only taking valuables that would fit in my van) and TMO did the rest. All I did was unplug electronics and take stuff off walls, and even then, they told me they would have taken the stuff off the walls themselves. I gave away all of the food and cleaning supplies that they wouldn't take to neighbors and paid someone $100 to come clean the house.

When they came to unload I had them unpack the kitchen so they could take all of the insane amount of boxes and paper.

    Easiest move of my life.

Do you guys have a lot friends in the area willing to help move? How far of a move is it? If I was moving a couples hour away I would consider a DITY.

We did a partial this last time since I was moving to him. I got the movers he did the UHAUL with the trailer for his car. He was moving 4ish hours I was moving 10hr drive. His was still the biggest PITA, he had to find a scale which wasn't a huge pain but since he was pulling his car he couldn't go over 50mph. If I had to do that cross country-- shoot me in the face instead. He was only moving his dorm (a desk, and about 12 boxes just enough that couldn't fit in his ford fusion), I was moving all the furniture, dishes -- everything. He/We did make some money but idk how much.

Personally, we don't have children but we I can imagine unloading and unpacking with a child would be pretty close to impossible. Is your H okay with doing all the moving while you watch your little one? or other way around?

I moved a ton during college to now (6ish times) and alway had friends and family to help. I hired movers my last move before this one and it was the best $400 I think I've spent.

  • I'm not sure what he thinks we have to do either.  Yes, we need to purge and organize, but we have to do that either way.

He came home for lunch, and we talked about it some more.  We're going with TMO.  He's not thrilled with it, but I pretty much told him I'm not doing a DITY.

  • When we PCS'ed here a few years ago we did a full DITY and we made a few thousand. Now this year, we will be pcs'ing overseas with a nearly 5 year old and a brand spankin' new baby so it's not even an option even if we didn't have the kids so...yeah.

Even if we were doing a CONUS PCS, I wouldn't even THINK about doing a DITY this time. No. You couldn't make me.

  • I've never had the option b/c we keep moving over large bodies of water, but I'm spoiled now.  No way do I ever want to pack anything again.  What a PITA.

Before we dated, H told me all he did for his partial was throw all his books in boxes.  They were the heaviest and easiest to pack, and he had to drive his truck anyway, so basically he got a little spending money.  I'd do that if we're even not moving over an ocean.
