39 week appointment - interesting...

So, my 39 week appointment was going pretty well.  Was talking to OB about my contractions this weekend and he was excited and thinks things are moving along very well.  Then it was exam time.  He determines that I am 3cm dilated and pretty much thinned out and then comes the 'uh, oh...I think I'm feeling a butt, not a head!'

Up to L&D we go for an ultrasound to see what position this baby is in.  Baby is frank breech.  Our hospital will not even attempt a breech delivery.  From the ultrasound they determined that there wasn't enough fluid to attempt a version.  As of now, our plan is to have me go back next Thursday and we'll check baby again.  If baby is still breech, then we schedule a c-section.  However, my OB seems to think I'm going to go into labour before my next appointment.  In light of that, I went to work today and told them that tomorrow is my last day.  They were totally fine with that.

The internal made me bleed quite a bit and I'm hoping that lets up soon because while I know it's natural, it's disconcerting to see.  I'm going to try the exercises off of spinning babies but my OB didn't seem too optimistic that baby will flip with the little amount of room left in there.

DH only gets 3 days off for paternity but can apply for time off to help a spouse recover from surgery so he's going to do some e-mailing tonight to see about getting that into place.

I didn't get to post my bump picture yesterday so here it is.  Winston wanted to get in on the action, too.

  • Turn baby rx, turn! I hope whatever exercises you have planned do the trick for you! You look amazing, btw.

  • I'll send out lots of vibes that baby will flip, but that doesn't really sound like much of a possibility.  So is your OB expecting you to go for an emergency c-section if you go in to labour within the next week?

I'm glad tomorrow is your last day at work.  It sounds like you don't need that added stress.

I'm glad tomorrow is your last day at work.  It sounds like you don't need that added stress.

About the bolded...pretty much.  There weren't really any openings to schedule a section until next Friday so that's why he said to just show up at my appointment next Thursday.  It would hopefully be not emergent enough to require general but quickly getting me a spinal once they realize it really IS labour and checking if baby is breech.

This is part of the reason why I want off work.  I want to be as unstressed as possible and keep this baby in and hopefully get scheduled for next Friday.

Also, I am not to wait until contractions are 5 minutes apart.  He said 7 minutes apart and come in, even if they aren't that painful.  Believe me, I'm going to be at L&D like a flash if I think anything is up.  I just feel bad for DH that if this happens while he's at work and I'm at home, he's 45 minutes away at least and I might already be heading into surgery as he gets there.

Funny thing is, when baby's 'butt' (what I was told was the butt at least) kept getting all up in my ribs, I kept pushing it back down and I would say to my DH, 'that's a big butt.  it feels too big to be the butt.'  Well, I was right and I've been poking my baby in the head for weeks  Sad

  • There's actually a lot of time from when you start contractions to when they really need to deliver. DH should be able to make it if you call him when they admit you. Plus, they'll try to hold off until he gets there. They're all for getting daddy in on the action.

I think a few of us here have had c-sections, so you if you need anything, feel free to ask. I hear that when it's planned, or at least you know it's coming, it's much easier to deal with. You'll need someone to help you at home, though for about a week, but you'll probably be in the hospital for most of that time, too. Try not to stress it. It's totally doable.

As for your workouts, you'll really need to take it easy if you head in for a c-section. You'll feel fine while doing something, but then the next day you feel like you just came out of surgery. Listen to the doctors on that one.

I hope this helps you and doesn't scare you. They're really not too bad.

  • Thanks, snoopy.  I'll definitely take you guys up on any questions I have in the next few days.

Unfortunately, my first week post c-section will not end up being mostly in hospital.  They are very strict that you only get 24 hours from delivery time with a vaginal delivery and 48 hours with a c section.  I think you can stretch it to 60 hours if you're having issues.

DH contacted his union rep about getting time off with me and the guy e-mailed back that he needs to call him.  I really hope he'll be able to be off for about 2 weeks to make things easier.

I do think it will be easier to deal with a c section knowing it's coming versus having it be a surprise.

  • From what I hear, they really do force you to get up and walk around, shower and such, as soon as possible. For me it wasn't an option. Ugh. I still shudder remembering all that crap. Anywho.

They gave me this giant pad thing to hold on my incision any time I had to cough or move, and it really helped. I don't know if it was making it so my skin wasn't pulling on it or what, but that was super helpful. I managed to use the bed any time I had to move. We also have a ledge on the side of our bed that helped, too. Then I just propped myself up on pillows so I didn't have as far to go when I got up.

The up-side...you go into labor and bam you get a baby. No waiting and wondering, pushing, all that jazz. I'm so excited for you!

  • I'm really hoping that the LO turns flips and the spinning babies exercises work!  If not, at least you are mentally prepared for the c-section.  In the end, the important thing is that you have a healthy baby.  Good luck and keep us posted!

  • I'm sorry to hear LO is breech. FX that the baby turns.

I am really happy to hear you are pretty much done work!  Yay!  1 week or less, you will be holding LO in your arms. Very exciting!

  • First of, boo for breech!  It sucks that they won't even attempt a breech vaginal delivery.  Your hospital seems rather strict too about timing.  I'm fairly certain ours gives 48-72 hours of stay for a section.

Also, if it's any consolation, I was a c-section baby, my brother was vbac, and my mom says she recovered more quickly from my birth than his.

Any money shots at the u/s?  Still team green?  :P

    Spin baby spin!
