Foreign Country Taxes

I'm so lost.

It's my first year doing taxes in Spain and I don't know what I have to declare from the US. Can you e-mail the embassy asking if they have a list of professionals used to working with Americans or are they going to bite my head off?

Re: Foreign Country Taxes

  • Sure you can e-mail them. I don't think they'll bite your head off even if they don't have any info for you. I think the worst you'd get would be, "I'm sorry, but we can't offer you assistance on this matter." But they may just have a list of accountants for you. It's worth a shot.

  • When I went to the U.S. Embassy in Paris last month to get a power-of-attorney notarized, I noticed they had a special window for "Tax assistance." Definitely take a look on the Embassy web page. You probably have to make an appointment and you should be ready to spend all day there. Here, at least, all the appointment did was authorize us to enter the Embassy and get a number to queue in the right line.

  • My biggest concern is about my Spanish tax return: Do I need do declare US holdings? What to declare? What are my responsibilities?

Hmmm, it's possible that the US Embassy folks are used to dealing with this and could answer that or perhaps refer you to an accountant who specializes in these kinds of issues. Does the Spanish version of the IRS have any kind of walk-in customer service? I wouldn't be too hopeful, but you could try...

We're going to give it a try tomorrow morning since it's the last day I can go. Love how everything official here is open until 2 pm at latest!

And then they're all off to enjoy their morcilla-laden lunches!

    Ick!

    No, gracias!

  • There might even be a list of professionals on the Consulates/Embassies website.  I was able to find a listing of English speaking doctors on the consulates website ;-)
