After a few HORRENDOUS experiences in the past, I successfully had nearly-painless whitening done yesterday. The results are fantastic, and I'm SO HAPPY today!
Here's what I did:
1 month in advance - Started brushing with Sensodyne Repair and Protect
1 week in advance - Went to my doctor and requested a serious painkiller for the procedure and recovery. Got a prescription for Dihydrocodeine.
1 hour before treatment (Zoom2) - Took painkiller.
I was able to have three sets of 12 minutes each of whitening. 36 minutes!!! It really didn't hurt - not even zingers during the treatment.
In total, I took three painkillers: 4PM, 8PM, and midnight. After confirming with my pharmacist that a little wine (white, of course!) wouldn't kill me, I drank some throughout the evening. This obviously intensified the effects of the painkiller, which is exactly what I wanted. I had some discomfort late at night, but no unbearable pain, and was able to fall asleep.
I woke up this morning with NO PAIN and seriously white teeth!
Re: How to Survive Teeth Whitening
Your doctor just doled out a Rx for a pain killer for teeth whitening? Really?
I'm glad you had a good experience, but that strikes me as kinda sketchy.
Yep, and it doesn't seem sketchy to me at all. From previous experience, I knew it was very painful. If I were a drug addict, however, I'm sure he wouldn't have done it.

The strips hurt my teeth too. The results from Zoom are pretty long-lasting. Ideally, I'd like to have it done once a year. But even doing it every other year makes a huge difference.
I'm sticking with the Sensodyne because I feel like it's the right toothpaste for me. But I think you can use any toothpaste you want.
It wasn't really that much work. I just switched toothpaste beforehand and then dedicated one night to "recovery." Of course, I don't have kids, so I can understand that it's more complicated if you do.
If you do the strips, just use Sensodyne (any variety) for a couple weeks before using them and continue to use it while you're bleaching. The nice thing about strips or any at-home whitening is that you're in total control of it. If you fine that you use the strips twice a day for 30 minutes and your teeth are sensitive the next day, then take a day off and just use them once a day. Any at-home whitening kit should work if you give it enough time and it's a lot cheaper than Zoom or other in-office procedures.
~~~MARRIED BIO~~~
I got the professional teeth whitening years ago, and couldn't handle it. My teeth became super sensitive, and my gums started bleeding.
For the past year or so though I've been using 5-minute teeth whitening, you cac get it at walmart, it comes in a little tube and works wonders. It takes a few days, like most whitening systems. It's only about $5, and I haven't had any issues with it.
Just an idea y'all might wanna try
Thanks for chiming in. You're absolutely correct! Please check with your own doctor before anyone tries this. I had just a little alcohol and DH was here in case anything went wrong, but you're still right.
Thank you!
