Can y'all help my friend? (weight loss advice)

Ok, so my friend posted this on WW's message boards, and they basically snarked her. :( I really wish I had advice for her, but I have none. :( I'd really appreciate any advice you can give...TIA!

I have been on the online program for about a month now. I have used WW in the past and have been very successful with my weight loss.  This go round, I have meticulously counted my points, tried to eat fairly low carb options, and have been working out about 6 days a week, doing a variety of workouts such as body pump, running, step class, kickboxing, you name it!  I also gave up soft drinks for Lent and completely just stopped drinking them altogether. My total weight loss thus far = 2 lbs.  I am at a total loss and can't imagine what I'm doing wrong.  In the past I've done WW but haven't really worked out and saw amazing results.  Now I feel like I'm actually going in with all I've got and I'm seeing nothing.  It's very disheartening and frustrating. Any advice?

Re: Can y'all help my friend? (weight loss advice)

  • I think we'd need to know a little more about what she's eating to really make any suggestions. Sounds like she's doing everything right, but I think we've all been there and there's just no explanation for it.

    Is she drinking enough water?

  • First: it's hard to tell if your friend may actually be at a healthy weight and her goal may be unrealistic.

Second: she's doing a lot of workouts that will build muscle--it's very possible that either water retention/soreness from the workouts or actual muscle gain is slowing down her losses. I find that on weeks I really push the workouts, I stay the same or see a small gain compared to weeks where I take it easy physically.

Third--has she played around with the program at all? It now defaults to where you use weekly points first and then use activity points only if you use up all the weeklies. I set it to use the activity points daily, and I generally eat the points I earn each day. I then try to make sure I still have about 20 weekly points left by the end of the week for the best results. Some people can eat all of their weeklies, other see better results if they don't touch the weeklies at all. She can also play around with her weigh-in day if she's online only. I do best with a Friday weigh in, so my weeklies are around for weekend events, and then I can be more disciplined with the work schedule M-Thurs. It works for me, but other people do a Monday weigh in to keep them disciplined all weekend.

Finally, is she 'really' sticking to the program. Does she weigh and measure her portions, is she drinking all the water, eating the veggies/fruit requirements? My results stall when I start thinking to myself 'yep, that looks like a 1/2 cup of whole wheat pasta' instead of actually measuring it. There's so many ways to tweak/personalize the program, hope she finds out what works!

  • I believe she's really sticking to the program. She's been really strict with it thus far, and I feel terrible that she's not seeing results. :( It's just so weird!
  • How much does your friend need to lose?  If she isn't excessively overweight 2lbs in 4 weeks isn't that bad.

I think she wants to lose about 30 lbs.

  • I do WW and my progress is slooooowww!  I also drop in spurts then level out or loose maybe a pound a month.  So first I would tell her to not feel bad about just 2 pounds.  How are her fruits & veggies?  I know some people have trouble when they go crazy with the free fruits.  On the other hand, is she eating at least 5 servings of F&V every day?  I struggled with getting enough for quite some time but now I probably eat 7-9 servings a day (2/3ish veg, rest fruit).  I feel much, much better eating that much compared to not enough.  And is she eating processed or salty foods?  I really like WW but I do NOT like how they push their frozen meals, almost fake yogurts, etc.  That stuff makes me a gassy, bloated mess so I try to avoid low-fat processed diet food.  As far as salt, if I have Chinese or Mexican food  I retain water for a few days.  Hormones can come into play too.  Once I went up 7 pounds when I had a really bad week of PMS.  It's not usually that much but I know I can expect to stay the same or even gain a little that week.  Usually I'm back to normal the next week.  I suggest she stick with it for another couple of months while she plays around with her points, what and when she eats, extra weekly points, etc.  Going to a few actual meetings might be a good thing too.

Also, I'm wondering about the snark.  What responses did they give her?

  • If she's working out more it could definitely be muscle gain that's slowing down her loss. I'd say she should just stick to it and try to stay on track with eating and workouts.
  • I agree with all the others but am also wondering how long ago she had success with WW. The reason I'm asking is because I  notice a HUGE difference in losing weight now that I'm in my 30s. I remember before I could, with effort, lose 2 lbs a week. Now it takes that same effort to lose .5-1 lb a week! She should also see if her clothes are starting to fit any better and def stick with i. 2 lbs in a month is slow, but actually pretty reasonable. FWIW I'm trying to lose baby weight right now, and have been doing a lot of weights and trying to build some muscle. In the past 3 months I've lost only about 10 lbs, but to look at pictures from a few months ago i look a heck of a lot heavier than just a 10 lb difference.
  • Thanks y'all for all of this advice/input!
  • I read this a day or two ago and have been thinking about it...so here are a few things I thought of... I agree with pp about fruit. I do not lose if I eat more than one banana a week.  Also, even though they say fruits are free, it's not really an allyoucaneat deal. Know what a serving size is. I have to limit to 3 fruits s day before. 4pm..... Your friend will not gain ~1 lb of muscle a week. That would be way to easy and eventually no one would be working out because they would be way overweight with muscle.  Eat to lose weight-exercise to be fit.....also, she might need to eat some of those activity points.  Under eating doesn't help.....also, once I really did include 2 servings of EVOO, I started losing.....also, have her get off processed food. I agree with pp about sodium and basic crap.  Eat real food, nothing from a factory. And that includes juices and sodas. Especially diet drink can sabatoge weight loss.... hope this helps
