Might meet his daughter this weekend

Last night at dinner, J said that he wasn't sure if his oldest daughter was coming for her visit this weekend because of spring break. He said that if she didn't come and it was just his youngest daughter, he was wondering if I'd want to meet her either tonight or tomorrow. (He knows that his oldest will make things a little harder because she's a teenager and he thinks she'll just ignore me and roll her eyes at me for a while, but that his youngest will take to me pretty quickly. He figures easing into it is the best way to go so as to not scare me off!).

This is big and scary! Even if it doesn't happen this weekend, just knowing that he's ready for that, and that things are going to change...it makes me sort of nervous! I've never dated a man AND his kids before Stick out tongue

Any words of wisdom?

  • Exciting, congrats!

I would maybe make sure he has some kind of special activity you guys can do together but not be forced to stare at each other and make conversation.  Tie dye, sandart, making cookies, whatever.

Yeah, it would probably be around dinnertime, so I'm thinking it would be something like a Dave and Buster's where we could interact and have fun.

    That sounds like fun.

I would just be careful not to set the tone of "everytime Emmii is here we do something super-duper fun", if that makes sense.  My XH was huge on always bringing desserts for my kids in the early stages and they started to expect it everytime.

    That sounds like fun.

  • I agree with PIP, just be yourself.  I was nervous the first time I met L's daughter (also my first time dating someone with kids), but it turned out great.

  • Not really... I haven't really dated anyone with kids. I have had an on/off long distance relationship with a man with a child but his viewpoint was to not introduce anyone to her until her was in a relationship well over a year or after the relationship was well established

I personally would be pretty scared to meet someone's child.. it brings the relationship to another level... but maybe i am over thinking things ? I would prefer to date someone with no kids so it would be a bit of a stretch for me to meet their kids and feel happy, excited about the whole thing...When I think of kids I think of custody/child support, etc and it generally sounds very stressful and complicated.

This is a first for me. He and I spoke over the weekend, and...it's very well established ;-)

It's definitely nervewracking. But for the most part everything is at least cordial with their mother, so on a "normal" basis things go smoothly.

Things are going very well for us, and he's really looking forward to putting both parts of his life together to enjoy. I got a new stepmom when I was the age of his oldest daughter, but the difference is, I wasn't your typical moody/hateful teenager, and I loved her and she bacame a really good friend to me. I'm not so much expecting that to happen here! lol
