How do you stop collection calls?

We get about three calls a day for a woman I have never heard of. They are all automated so there is no one to talk to, and there is never contact info that does not involve yet another automated service where I can simply leave a voice mail. I am sick of the calls, and slightly worried a goon is going to show up on my doorstep lol

I found these links to be helpful:

This site may have some info on it somewhere about wrong numbers too: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/consumer.shtm

    We have caller ID.

In the end I blocked the numbers directly with Comcast.

  • We have caller ID as we'll. The numbers are deceptive. plus, the act of the phone ringing is the annoyance, regardless of whether I answer it.
  • This is happening to me to. Damn you Elizabeth Butler who ever you are.

    Bazinga!

    you can do this? thanks.

  • If they call when you are home, answer it and tell them that you are not who they are looking for - we get these calls ALL THE TIME (someone with my last name and same first initial doesn't pay her bills).  DH started answering and telling them they have the wrong number and to take us off the list and it's helped.

They are all automated. There is not a real person on the other end. Just a machine.

  • Have you googled the phone number?  What does it tell you?  You may get an address where you can send a cease and desist letter.

  • The ones I get start as a robot, but if you listen you eventually get a menu that says, if you are John Doe, press 1. If you are not John Doe, press 2. Then something about if John Doe lives there but is not available, or if John Doe does not live there. Then I get transferred to a real person and can tell them to stop fricking calling five times a day because I have never heard of John Doe and certainly don't pay his bills.

I think I'm sad to hear other people get these calls too. I thought I was just getting them because my land line number is only about six months old. I've maxed out my Comcast blocked numbers list as well. My landline was ringing all day long the first couple months I had it. Grrr.

  • If you're home, get the name of the person calling and the name of the company they work for. Write them down. Tell them the person they're calling for does not live at the residence attached to this phone number and that if they call again you will report them to the FTC. Then, if someone from the company calls again, report them here.

I have never had a company call a second time after I've taken their info and said the words Federal Trade Commission.

ETA, just saw that you said they're automated. Usually if you stay on the line or press 0 you can get a person. They won't stop until you take the time to talk to someone, which sucks.

  • Try answering with a business name, like Mary's Bakery or something.  When they ask for the person, say s/he doesn't work there and stop calling your place of business.  That often works.

You can ask Comcast to block a number?  Who knew?

The ones we get are automated, but if you pick up, you have a selection to talk to a person.  We had one last week that got very angry at my husband b/c we were not how she was looking for.  My favorites are the ones where they leave a msg. and tell you it's for Jane Smith and if you are not Jane Smith to stop listening - on my answering machine!

  • We get calls for a family member. Because we are listed as Last name, first inital and DH has the same first inital as this person, they never believe it isn't this family member. Grr. I've tried telling them and they still call.

  • I've had to call a number and give them a 15 digit case number and plead my case. I get a lot that are from "Private Callers" too.

I get these a lot too - you can usually press 0 and it will send you to their operator. Or call the number back.

  •  We were getting automated collection calls at work on our help line. We called back (a lot) & were able to get a real person by staying on the line. Eventually, we were able to get them to stop.
