Somewhat F&B related- TTC

We are finally at the point that we are ready for TTC, and I would like to lose a few more (5) lbs before we do get pg and have a routine of cardio so I can continue during pregnancy.

When you were TTC, did you proactively change your eating, drinking, workout, and F&B routine? if so how far in advance? or you waited to get pg and illiminated use certain products, food, etc.

I came across a blog that she had changed everything 6 months before TTC, like no coffee, alcohol, beauty products with certain chemicals.... Although I find it a little too excessive, but at the the same time don't know if it's a bad thing or not.

Re: Somewhat F&B related- TTC

  • I tried to get myself in decent shape in the months leading up to TTC, but that was it. No avoiding specific food/drinks, and certainly no avoiding products.
  • If that blog is the pre-babyblog with a mail-order russian bride and a weird real-estate selling husband, I would take her "advice" with a grain of salt.  She went of the deep end.

It's great to get in shape and prep for pregnancy - I think the best thing is to look at your diet and make sure that is full of fresh fruits and veggies and then start a couch-2-5k or similar program that will get you started and excited about exercising.

Also, you could join a gym that has cardio and pregnancy classes so you could just continue going if/when you get pregnant.

    Good luck.

  • I've never TTC but that blog will freak anyone out. Do what is reasonable for you.

    LOL!!!

I am already a member at a regular gym 24hr fitness and used to do spinning clasees frequently, I just haven't been to the gym so much lately and don't think it's a problem to get back into it. I found the no coffee, change of beauty routine a little too excessive 6 months prior!!!

  • No, the only thing I changed while TTC was I started taking a Prenatal vitamin. I didn't change much after I was pregnant. I stopped drinking (obviously) and made sure I didn't drink more than one soda a day. I still painted my nails, and got my hair colored. My doctor told me not to worry, so I didn't.

but... I wasn't using any acne meds that cause birth defects... if I had been I would have cut those!

  • I do agree that getting yourself in shape and living a reasonably healthy lifestyle is best before TTC.  From a development standpoint, all the major foundations of a growing baby happen before you even know you are PG.  That being said, I agree with the prebaby blog lady being a little whako.  You are not going to ruin your child if you have a glass of wine or two the day you conceive or drink coffee.  I'm not sure that there are many products you need to avoid other than certain prescription drugs (check with your MD...it's a good idea for you and DH to get a physical to make sure eveything is in working order).  I would start by finding an eating and exercise routine you like and will stick to.  Try to limit processed foods, refined sugars and empty calories.  Caffeine and alcohol in moderation.  Heck...we can all benefit from this, TTC or not!
  • Oh right -- I did start prenatals three months before we started TTC, as suggested by my doctor.
  • I took pre-natal vitamins for at least three months before we TTC.

  • We are going to ttc within the next 6 months.  This is what I have done so far: off bcp, started prenatals, be more conscious of otc meds and only take when needed, incorporate light excercise for a more active lifestyle.  I could def stand to lose a few lbs but I am more concerned with being strong and healthy.  My diet is not too bad imo but I am currently drinking more and eating more of things like sushi, shellfish, etc., while I can.  Oh yes, we also priortized buying life insurance.

  • Can someone direct me to this crazy blog?  It sounds like good entertainment :)

I didn't change anything when TTC, and honestly I really didn't do much differently while pg other than take my vitamins, stop drinking, and stop my topical acne meds.  I do think it's a good idea to be in decent shape before getting pg, if nothing else it helps to not have weight other than baby weight to lose afterwards.

  • I am trying to find the blog again, I should have saved the link!!! In my search I also came across this one, hers is pretty intense, too:

  • I wouldn't worry about losing another 5lbs.  Your weight can fluctuate 3lbs either way over the course of a day due to fluid intake, fluid retention, and bathroom regularity.

My pregnancy was a surprise, but if I have another one, I would get a better grip on working out, drinking more water, and taking PNVs beforehand.  I pushed for 2.5hrs before they used the vacuum to get him out, and I'm pretty sure it was b/c I wasn't in as good of shape as I should have been.  I think being in good physical shape makes for an easier delivery.  I would also discontinue use of non-necessary Rx drugs (Retin-A, spironolactone, etc).

As for food and alcohol, I don't have an opinion - I eat a balanced diet and don't drink to excess, so these are not things I would consider changing while TTC.

  • Are these people living in the real world?  There are enough things to give up when you are pregnant/nursing/parenting, so I say live it up now.  Sure, being in shape will probably help your fertility and make pregnancy a tad easier on your body (although it's still gonna kick your arse), but I wouldn't go overboard.

This is the 5lbs after considering the 3lbs fluctuation!! LOL!! I am so proud that I lost 10 lbs in the fall and did it by calorie counting which led to healthy diet and workout, we just got too busy taking care of sick MIL after the new years that we let the healthy diet and exercise go, now that our house guest has left, I am ready to get back into it.

  • My dermatologist told me to stop taking certain medications about 3 months before TTC.

So just look into any medications you might be taking (all medications, not just ones for your skin).

Also, as everyone already mentioned be sure you are taking prenatal vitamins. Folic acid is very important.

Oh!  Gotcha.  Eh, just cut out the booze and eat grilled chicken and broccoli for a week and you'll be fine. ;)

  • Caffeine was the hardest thing for me to give up (or lower intake of). I switched from coffee to green tea which has much less caffeine.

    I also stopped using Retin-A.

For exercise, I had been training for a 1/2 marathon so I was already in shape. If you already belong to a gym, I'd just keep that up. I did a lot of elliptical machine and walking on an incline on the treadmill when I was pregnant (up until 30? weeks or so). I reallllly think that helped me have an easy pregnancy and delivery.

I am not on any medication, so I don't worry about that. But I was wondering more like beauty products, like nail polish, hair color, etc.

  • so, before you find out that you're pregnant, (i.e. you get a positive test) baby is not actually drawing any resources from you. There's a yolk in the egg that they live on.  So that's why it's nbd for people to drink or smoke in those early days (haven't we all heard the story of a mom getting drunk before she knew she was pregnant?)

That said, I used our TTC time as practice in light drinking, which was fine.

Exercise is important, and dang it, get some sleep! :)

FWIW, I was in awesome shape when I delivered (ran well into my 3rd tri) but I still needed a vacuum. (after 4.5 hours of pushing)  I guess that  if I hadn't been in such good shape I couldn't have gotten her so low and would have required a C.

They tell you not to do any exercise during pregnancy that you didn't do prepreg, so if there's something you'd like to do (yoga, for example) start doing it now!

And congrats :) Babymaking is fun :)

Oh and that blog is prebabyblog.com . She said that she was just going to spend her pregnancy mostly indoors :| She's not that dumb but some of the crazy that comes out of her mouth is just incredible.  She's a typical self-obsessed know it all.

  • Our pregnancy was a surprise;I didn't change anything. I was already in great shape. I started taking prenatals when we found out, so there really wasn't anything more to do.

  • Hmm, all I did was switch to higher quality prenatal vitamin. Dyed my hair back to it natural color and bought polishes without the super bad chemicals. The coffee thing took care of its self. At 6 weeks it started tasting like ass to me. I wouldn't worry about 5 lbs at all. You will puke off 10 lbs in the first tri!  LOL :)

  • When we started TTC #1, I wanted to make the "perfect womb", so I quit drinking alcohol, quit smoking the occasional pot, ate very healthy food, and worked out all the time.  I was miserable.  And it took us 22 months to get pregnant.  After about 18 months of TTC with no luck(even fertility drugs didn't help), I said " it" and started drinking (moderately), ate whatever I wanted, laid off the gym, etc.  I got pregnant 4 months later.

When we started TTC #2, I threw out my birth control pills, but still did everything else exactly thr same as before.  I went on roller coaster rides during my 2ww, drank whatever I wanted, stayed up late, etc.  I got pregnant 2 months after stopping BCP.

So, my thoughts on this, are don't let TTC run your life.  Live your life, have fun, enjoy your time with your husband, and you will get pregnant.  Don't stress out about it.

    Best of luck!!!!

  • I am taking a prenatal vitamin.  I work out 3-4 days a week and try to run when I cannot go to the gym.  I have been trying for 5 months now unsuccessfully so I am now cutting back on the coffee and maybe the drinking.  Besides that I havent really done anything.

  • My first pregnancy happened while I was on the pill, my second after only a month of trying and my third pregnancy took us almost a year. I didn't have he patience to alter my lifestyle too much after 4 months of trying that third time. I switched from running to yoga and eliptical when pregnant this time because I had bleeding problems for a month in the begining and didn't want to push it. I recommend just taking a prenatal vitamin.

    ETA: Good Luck!!!!

  • Our TTC jouney took 2+ years due to MFI.  Outside of adding prenatals to my routine(the sooner you start the better) I didn't change a darn thing.  I continued to keep on living and DS turned out completely normal.  I think it's silly to change your entire life to prepare for what "may" happen - I would've gone crazy if I cut out all the not-so-good stuff in my life for 2+years.

Once I finally got pregnant I changed my ways a bit - cut out ALL alcohol, cut back on the caffeine, didn't eat sushi, etc. Thinking back I didn't change my beauty routine at all and never thought twice about it.

I don't see anything wrong with being a bit more careful when making choices, but I think people who go to the extremes are overdoing it. IMO, the "art of making a baby"  couple are total wack jobs and kind of creep me out.

    Good luck!!!

  • Thank you for the responses, I feel much better now, knowing not everyone goes to this bloggers extremes! I am stressed out about it already (feel like I am starting too late), I have a dr's appointment soon, so hopefully everything checks out ok.
  • We've been ttc'ing for a long time.  The only special stuff I do is take my Rx prenatals and refrained from using Retin A.

  • I cut out aspartame and other fake sugars. H is older, so I also read a lot on how to get the healthiest sperm (you're only 1/2the equation). Once I was KU, I switched to glass Tupperware for anything that might go in the microwave.
