I want to start applying for some positions within my company. I still need to find out with HR what the proper protocol is with telling my boss. I believe it may be that I need to tell him before applying... does that sound like the norm?
My question is this. I have become friendly with many of the other dept's on campus. Some I would consider friends. I will not take a position that pays lower or equal to what I have. The salaries here are very wild. Two people in the same position may have wildly different pay due to dept. budgets. I have spread the word already to a couple people I know that I'm looking and they are keeping an open eye. The thing is, for the ones I'm close to, do you think I should reveal what my minimum salary would need to be so they can just tell me right away if I should even apply? I hate to waste everyone's time if there's zero possibility of the dept's salary meeting my needs. Since I'm close to these people, it seems natural I'd say something, but then again, this is business and maybe I should ignore the fact I'm close to them. Thoughts?
Re: applying for positions within company, question
Yes, it's normal to let your boss know pretty early on that you're looking to transfer internally.
I'm not the type to talk salary with CWs, even those who are friends. Isn't there a way to find out the salary early on in the application process?

First review your HR manual or call someone at HR and find out what is the policy. I have worked at places, that you did not have to inform your boss and some places you had to inform you boss. Also find out how does HR posts new positions and how do they advertise, ask them to let you know when an opening comes up.
I also would keep it quiet! You don't want poeple to talk about you looking for something else beside what you do! Poeple gossip and the last thing you want it that your boss or the dept head to hear that you are not happy where you are and looking to leave. When a position becomes available, that's when you speak with your boss that you are considering applying for that position, if that's the policy, but I also think it is a courteous thing to do.
Also never discuss salary with coworkers or work friends!!! if you are not interested in a job because of salary, you don't have to explain to anyone, a simple this job is not a good fit for me is enough. (you wouldn't have to explain, if you don't tell poeple you are looking for a job).
Thanks guys! I should add that the salaries at our workplace are public record. However when new positions arise, I would have no idea what they are offering.
And I know generally speaking that people shouldn't blab about wanting a new job. But my boss is great and I am sure he has an idea I want to progress and cannot in this office. I assume what I say can get back to him but I don't think it would be a negative thing at all. He would likely be very supportive. In fact I considered lightly bringing it up but I don't want him to stress out over the fact I might leave.
Since you are an internal candidate, HR maybe able to give the salary bracket, or salary level for that position, that's just a thought.
In response to your comment that your boss is very supportive, that may actual be more hurtful to him if he finds out from someone else beside you.
good point. I'm going to have to think about this some more.
