Question about housing

Let's say a couple is dual military and want to live on base.. do they take both BAH or just one? Does it change if they have kids?
What if one is O and one is E?

Re: Question about housing

  • Some please correct me if I'm wrong, BUT I think think the higher ranking BAH gets taken out and the lower ranking can be kept. Nothing should change if they have children, just allowed a bigger house.

  • It depends if it's privatized.

If housing is not privatized, they take both BAHs.

If housing is privatized, they take the higher ranking member's BAH.

This is why we live off base.  Having no dependents, we qualify for the smallest house, so basically as two NCOs, we'd be paying $2500 for a two bedroom house, while a junior enlisted with a kid essentially pays $900 for a three bedroom house.

    That is insanity.

    This.

I thought they were moving all housing to being privatized?

  • I lived in base housing when I was dual-mil, and they took out H's BAH since he was higher ranking, plus a bit extra to equal the dependent rate. In our case it was worth it because we were able to save a lot more than we would have living off-base.

They would be able to live in officer housing since the higher ranking pays the BAH.  Once they have kids, the higher ranking member will receive dependent rate BAH and the other will still receive single rate.

That's the goal, but we're not all there yet.  My current base still isn't.

    Gotcha!

    Anyway, how are you feeling?

  • Would you want to be the enlisted spouse living in O housing? I don't think I would. Are you thinking about joining again?
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

I've never stopped thinking about joining. It just got put on hold a little bit for various reasons. I don't know if I'd mind being the enlisted spouse in O housing. I guess I never really thought about it.

I asked mainly because I was driving to work (when I think of the most random things) and thought how this would work. Our neighbors are dual mil and one is O and one is E, but they live off base so I didn't know how that would work.

  • If you're a kid factory, you get a 5 bedroom house on my base. OR if you do it Duggar style, they'll turn a duplex into a single house for you. Kid factory, I tell you.

I'm good!  Plenty of energy, less nausea than I've had in months, and I'm able to do way more walking around now than I have during the rest of the pregnancy, so I'm happy. :)

In a lot of places they're mixed in.  Here at Hickam there were A1Cs living next door to captains.  We figured it was the young enlisted with lots of kids mixed in with the child-free officers.

    This really ruffles my feathers.

I would be piised if I worked my way up to Captain and got that (presumably nice) housing and A1C with < 3 years and his wife with 5 billion kids moved in next door and got the same housing because homeboy can't wrap it up.

Not entirely the same, but I live in a combined SNCO and CGO housing area. One neighbor is an E-7, the other is an 0-3. I'm at a smaller base though so it makes sense.  There is not a lot of housing, and they still separate the junior NCOs/airmen and FGOs.

This I could see.. especially with a smaller base/post.

  • HIckam is big.  I don't want this to come across as anti-enlisted, but it's a reason we didn't feel that a captain's bah was worth living on base. We could do better on our own.  We almost felt like it was a punishment for not popping out kids.

H is junior enlisted and I feel the same way you do! Officer housing/neighborhoods are for people that have worked their way up there. They deserve that housing because they earned it (and higher ranking enlisted for that matter). Now J-E shouldn't get super nice housing because his wife pops out a kid every year. It's just not right.

*applause*  a chick here on base was just b!tching to me about how upset she was that she couldn't get a nice 4 bedroom house... her H JUST picked up ( I'm talking on the 1st of April) E-5 and she's pregnant with #2 and moving to Jr Enlisted 3 bedroom...The same move we just made.    She's all " I couldn't get a nice house and I have to be subjected to living next to trashy neighbors because my H doesn't want to be an officer."  O_O  They're GIVING you a nice, renovated house ( not a tower) because you're having a new baby.  You don't have to pay bills if you don't want to have cable/ internet.  We live a minute away from the commissary.  It's a fine area.  Shut. up.
