Yay or Nay: Maxi Skirts...

... on petite women. I'm finding myself drawn to pictures of maxi skirts but I am not sure that I can pull it off at my height.

What say you, can petite ladies pull off a maxi?

Re: Yay or Nay: Maxi Skirts...

  • I think Ditzi has one (or maybe it was just a maxi dress with a shirt over it).  Either way she looked cute and she's petite.

  • I have to see it first, I think some petite ladies who are on the skinnier side can pull it off very well.

  • Yay.  I think they look great.  I have one from Target and would love to get more.  I'm 5'2.

  • I haven't seen enough petite women in them to judge.

It's not only about height with the maxi, imo, it's also about "willowy"... on the thin side with delicate bone structure.

tambcat is not amazingly tall, and she looks amazing in maxi skirts, because she is willowy.

that's the word I was looking for!! Willowy!!!

  • So what's "willowy?"

    I'm a 0/2 but pear-shaped.

  • I love the look of maxis on short people but for some reason when I wear them it looks terrible. = Curvy 6 footer over here
  • This blogger is petite and I think she looks really cute!

  • It is all in the willowness of the woman, and the fit of the skirt. The really gathered skirts look terrible on petite women. Slim, straight skirts can work (like the blue one above).

I am just over 5' and I only have 1 maxi skirt which truly looks 'acceptable'. I have to try really hard to pair it with artsy shirts, or else I end up looking like a homeschooler...

  • Nay for me at 5'1 (and a 2/4).  I'm definitely not "willowy."  I don't consider myself petite, just short.  I have an average sized frame.  Maxi anything looks horrible on me.

  • I'm 5'5" and curvy/athletic and my go-to in the summer are my maxi dresses, I've also bought a couple of maxi skirts to try out when the weather warms up.

  • It definitely depends on the skirt. I'm 5'1" and while not willowy, I'm still small. I have one from Target that looks really cute and I plan on wearing it with wedges for a taller effect. I think if the fit is right, a maxi skirt or dress can be a really good look on petite women because if you wear wedges it makes you look taller, kind of like the trouser pant effect with heels.

This.  I'm 4'11.5" and I am not stick thin but I *think* I pull off the maxi skirt fairly well.  I think it's all in how you style it.  If I style it right I think it actually makes me look longer and it's a staple in my wardrobe this year.

lol at "homeschooler." You have articulated my concern over the length of my denim skirt in my post further up the page. And my sister even DOES homeschool, but out of medical necessity and doesn't fit the profile.

  • But it's gotta brush the floor. I think it looks silly to wear such a casual skirt with heels!

  • It's a yay for me. I think it has more to do with the cut of the skirt than the height/shape of the person though. The big wide maxi skirts don't look right on most people to me. I prefer a slimmer shape, not skin tight of course, but more like a loose tube shape than an exaggerated A-frame if that makes sense.

Like this looks better to me:

I was homeschooled, and despise the stereotypes, so I am more conscious to avoid them...
