I am doing my first 5K race tomorrow. I'm excited, and really happy with my progress. Last Saturday, I ran 5K in 32:24, which I am proud of considering 9 weeks ago I could barely jog for a minute.
In mid-May there is a trail 5K race in my town. It is a run/walk, so I'm not going to shamed out of the race if I am slow. I think it would be fun and challenging, and if I can't run the whole thing, it would be okay. I am a little worried about getting frustrated by bunching up on the narrow trail (I can barely stand walking behind people at the mall). Is there any reason for me to not do this race? There is the slight risk of falling and breaking my neck, but I could also do that running on a sidewalk. If I decide to do it, I'll probably check out the trail before the race.
I'm going to start strength/cross training at the gym next week. I bought new running shoes when I started C25K and I spent a lot of money, so I've only been wearing them to run. What kind of shoes are best for the gym? Should I wear some old running shoes (that killed my knees when I tried to run in them)? My new running shoes? Buy something specific for the gym (if so, what?)? I over pronate when I run, so I got stability shoes for running.
Thanks!
Re: Two unrelated questions: trail 5K race and shoes for gym?
I did a 5.5 mile trail race and LOVED it... by the time I got to the narrower parts, the pack had thinned so it was very easy to go through without stumbling on people.
I wear my running shoes at the gym for everything except spin... but I'm not saying that's the correct thing to do..

Definitely do the trail race, love them, they are so fun! If you feel like you need to pass someone, maybe you can just ask them if you can pass? Or say "on your left" or something like that when passing? I know if it was me getting passed I would move over a little for someone if there was room, of course. I think you'll be alright.
Anyway, as for the shoes, *ideally* you should probably have cross training specific shoes for the gym, but I do wear my old running shoes occasionally. I have a pair of cross training Nike Frees that I use at the gym most of the time.
oh man, this makes me a little nervous. i am doing my first 5 k tomorrow and it's a trail through a winery. also worried about the other runners as i am used to running by myself. i guess i'll see how it goes. i think you should do it though. your time is awesome! i just did my pb yesterday at 34 and some change. I will be super happy if i can do it in the mid 30s saturday. i was running in the low 40s just a few weeks ago so i feel like it will be a huge accomplishment. i'll keep you posted on how it goes and what i think about the trail run. But i hear they are a alot of fun, so I do think it will be fine.
Re: shoes, I wear my running shoes to the gym for classes I take, which is body pump. Not sure if it's correct either, but that's what I do.
Good luck!!
Thanks for the input, everyone!
Try not to be too nervous. This is a really hilly trail in the woods (ie lots of roots to trip over). A trail in a winery may be completely different. Plus, it's a winery! That's awesome! You should not be wearing running shoes when you're doing cross training. What kind of cross training are we talking? Like.. Step, or just the elliptical?
Running shoes have a wider base than cross trainers. They are fine for weight lifting (you can get away with any shoe for lifting, really) but not goo for higher intensity cross training like group classes. In those classes you are shifting from side to side a lot, and it's much easier to roll an ankle if you have that wide base to trip you up. (I have personally experienced this.. not pleasant.)
I have just a basic pair of Nike's for cross training, or I wear my Vibrams.
You're fine wearing your running shoes to Body Pump because you aren't moving your feet a lot. It's a pretty stationary class besides some lunge tracks. If you were wearing them to Body Step or Body Combat, however.. that would be unwise.
Honestly, I'm not sure yet. I think I'm mainly going to be lifting weights and swimming. I am going to try to meet with a trainer next week though. They have classes, but I'm not sure how many I'm going to be able to fit in my schedule.
