Hi all - I had way too adventuresome of a weekend! DH and I got a late start to my folks' cabin on Friday because I was waiting for some stuff in the wash that I needed to pack. We hit the road and it was torrentially raining and blowing to beat the band. I made DH turn on the weather station on the radio and there was a horrible wind storm that we were in the tail end of heading straight for my parents house in WI. I called ahead but they said it was a gorgeous night and were going to go to dinner.
They left for dinner but when they got to the restaurant, the power was out so they turned around to go home. As soon as they pulled onto our main street, trees started falling down around them (miraculously missing them every time) and they had to stop about (----) this far from home because an enormous tree fell and blocked the entire street. My sister unhooked her baby from the carseat, handed him to my BIL, and told him to run for my Grandma's house and get in the basement and stay there. Meanwhile, they sat in the car until things chilled just enough to hurdle the tree and join him.
We were driving still and goign through town after town after town where trees were pulling down electrical lines and were laying in the streets. We were hearing the news stories about how 3 kids got washed downriver from their campsite and had gone missing. We had to turn around and find new routes 3 times because they were completely blocked by trees. Our 2 and a half hour trip took well over 4 hours. The storm finally let up and people emerged from their houses. My Grandma's deck was ripped off the house by a huge oak that had tipped over at its base. A tree fell between their cars but not on them. They crawled out of the driveway over and under limbs, branches, and trunks and got the big tree off the road just enough that you could squeak by.
We finally arrived after having to off-road it a bit. No power which since they are on a well up there means no water. In the morning, everyone was up early to survey the damage. We escaped with remarkably little damage. 2 trees fell that narrowly missed the house (one within fractions of an inch!!). Our boat canopy was shredded. All things considered, not bad. There were several boats in the lake that had flipped over, lift and all and had drifted across the lake. I have no idea how they're going to flip them upright. Some sunk altogether.
Our next door neighbors have a generator and we used it to power the fridge for the weekend but we went entirely without lights or water the rest of the time. We had gone out to the store and bought drinking water right away in the morning which was good but we rationed it out in a big way. We cooked on the grill all weekend which turned out really good actually!
I came home last night and took a long hot shower. Bathing in the lake only can get you so clean. It felt great. And I got to flush the toilet! It is the little things. ![]()
I hope that you all had a much much much calmer weekend!!!
