Ive looked it up and am hearing different things from other people. I figured you ladies would have a better idea due to experience. When you PCS I assume both you and your spouse need to get new state ID's simply because one has to have an updated address on it. However, I read somewhere that only the dependent really needs a new ID if he/she plans on working. Which is it? I know this seems like common sense and I thought it was till DH said something about not needing a new ID.
Also... what about vehicle registration?
Re: State ID
Neither of us got new driver's licenses. We both still have our home state ones and they're expired. I think it's called the Military Spousal Relief Act?
Our original vehicle is still registered in our home state at our IL's address so the tab renewal will go to them and they can mail it to us each year.
Our new vehicle is registered in our current state b/c we bought it here.
We both have our ID's from our home state. I renewed mine via mail and DH's is expired. Though, we recently heard that there is a limit to how long you can let it lapse. If that is true he is going to have to handle that before we PCS to Guam.
We sold our truck but that was registered in Michigan and we are now a one car family since I no longer work. The car is registered here in Louisiana but, we are going to register it in Michigan (home state) if we can leave it that way while we are in Guam.
So since I live in an apt and DHs dad has a house here, I should go renew my current ID to have FILs address on it before we PCS? with his permission of course.
We continue to maintain residency in H's HOR. Getting a new DL can jeopardize that. I think most states have some combination of things that negate residency, like tag/title car plus DL = residence, but it's dependent on the state.
We just use my FIL's address for ours, so it's actually a legit mailing address. However, our state has us listed as out of state residents. I think that's fairly unique. Our ballots automatically get mailed to our current location, and we just get new stickers for our DLs that actually have both addresses on them.
We actually have one Hawaii car, since it was new to us when we moved here, and it's only $25/year. Our home state is $80 for 2 years, and my car was already registered there. I'll probably renew it, too, since most states aren't nearly as cheap as $40/year.
Our vehicles still have their original registration state (from before DH entered). They mail the annual registration form to the address we have on file with them, which is out of that state. We also still maintain licenses from that state, including changing the address to our current address, which is again, out of state.
Yep, I literally have a license from one state with an address in another state. It's entertaining to see the reactions when someone notices it.
The only real pain in the ass aspect for me is that the state makes me go and update/renew my driver's license in person because I am an evil foreign national. Apparently, getting a notarized copy of my green card isn't sufficient - they need to see it in person. Eventually, this may cause me to get a DL in a different state...
ETA: we also have purchased a new vehicle since leaving our home state - that vehicle is registered in our home state... We received a 30 day registration for the state we were in when we purchased it, while waiting on the plates from our home state.
We have our DL's from the state of our "home of record"
Our cars were bought here, so they have NJ liscense plates. We aren't in any hurry to change our HOR, so we keep our FL drivers liscenses. BUT I don't have a job yet, so I don't know how this would effect that. I would assume if a great job came up and they required an in-state DL, I would probably change it.
I don't think either has to get a new one. I eventually got a new one for my current state because I legally changed my name and did not have a drivers license with my legal name. Many states you can even have an expired license. Check with your home state though to see their rules on how long it can be expired. Our home state says that it never needs to be renewed (nor does registration or things like that), but they require you to carry around a letter. I think each state has a different timeline on this though so check with the individual state.
If you still plan on claiming your old state as residency you can get a driver's license in your old state but with your new state's address on it in many states. There is extra paperwork to fill out and depending on how often your state actually does this kind of thing it may be difficult to find the right person to talk to at the DMV about it.
DH could purchase and register a car in our current state without having a DL from this state, but the car dealerships would not allow me to purchase a car with my old state's license. I don't know if that was just a local car dealership thing or if that is actually some law or something.
I travel for work - car rental folks usually check the license a bit more closely than other places...
My H still has a WA license with no expiration date (it says military rather than a date). I got a FL license when we PCS'ed since I was changing my name, we moved 2 days after our wedding. He bought a car since we moved, he just changed the address on our insurance to register it.
ETA - my car is still registered in WA I just put my parents address on the "location" address with the DMV and my FL address as the mailing address so my tags got sent directly to me.
