TIP mamas, your book recommendations, please
My OB recommended What to Expect... and Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy, but the reviews on Amazon are bad for both. Anyone have thoughts on either of these? Can anyone recommend another pregnancy book they liked?
Re: TIP mamas, your book recommendations, please
I liked WTE just fine -- pretty straightforward.
And, FYI, get ready for "bad reviews" being a huge part of anything and everything you do pregnancy and/or parenting-related.
Seriously. It all causes brain damage. No matter what you do.
I felt like at the time WTE was more like "What to Lie Awake At Night Worrying About When You're Expecting". They mention so much random mess that could happen, I found my hormonal (and paranoid) self worrying about stuff that, in retrospect, was ridiculous. But overall, it was helpful, and I read the damn thing cover to cover.
I read some breastfeeding guide....but I don't remember the name and I gave it away. The cover was yellow, if that helps. (I suck.)
My BFF recommended Jenny McCarthy's Belly Laughs for a fun, non-WTE read. I never got around to reading it though. I was too busy looking through all the ridiculous names in the Baby Name Book.
Currently Reading: Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes
LOL Fuss-- you are right about feeling screwed no matter what. When in doubt read as much as you can and take what you like from them. In the end you will find what works for you and your baby.
I liked WTEWYE, and The Girlfriend's Guide. Just be aware that not every little thing that is in that book will happen to you specifically. I read through both and felt that it was a good exercise.
Also, I took a birthing class (natural birthing) but when the time came I was a spaz (no one here is surprised, I know) and forgot all of it. So try to make one if you can and see if it helps you. I wouldn't go to another because I just didn't have the where-with-all during labor to use the techniques. Then again my labor was fast. So who knows if it had been longer if I may have not been so spazzy.
I liked the Girlfriend's Guide and read it all the way through. Like PP, WTE just made me worry constantly. So I used it more like a reference book and just looked things up when I needed to and read about what I needed to read about.
I've heard a lot of good things about the Mayo Clinic's pregnancy book but I can't remember what it's called.
BFP #4 It's a BOY!

We miss you and love you always, little firecrackers!
The Girlfiend's Guide was sort of 'meh' for me. There was some useful stuff in it but nothing that I hadn't been told about already by TIP. WTE was definitely more info than I needed but it was good to know that info, too.
Early childhood development, you're going to want Love & Logic for Toddlers and 1-2-3 Magic. Love & Logic starts "discipline" when LO is around 6mo. And by "discipline" I mean consequences for actions. Ex - if you LO throws food off his/her tray, mealtime is done. (And believe it or not, it works like a charm - those little buggers are smart and they can figure out X behavior = no more food and they stop doing it.
DH and I found this DVD to be invaluable - http://www.amazon.com/Laugh-Learn-About-Childbirth-Bayles/dp/B000PLXFSS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1334325521&sr=8-3
At the time, between DH's crazy work schedule, trying to move, sell two houses, etc., we just did NOT have time for a class. Even if we had time for classes, though, this DVD would have been awesome just for reference if you missed/forgot something.
WTE was fine, IMO. I didn't read it cover to cover... but I did use it for reference throughout.
Belly Laughs was given to me, but never read it. Jenny McCarthy makes me twitch.
H bought himself the Caveman's Guide to Pregnancy. The "ugh, men!" Bumpies have got to love that book. It's written as though all men are idiots. H rolled his eyes a lot when reading that one.
I have another one (yeah, people thought hey, she likes to read... lets buy her the entire reference section) called Pregnancy Day by Day. It's literally a daily account of your pregnancy. It's fairly redundant since it's a daily record, but there's some decent reference stuff in there. Full-color photographs throughout (not diagrams or drawings) so that's actually kinda interesting if you don't get grossed out easily.

If I ever get KU, I am just going to annoy you people with all my questions. I mean, really. Who needs a book when you have TIP mamas at your fingertips? Sound good?
Oh, yes. You will love me. LOVE me.
Are you sure you still want a MiniMuddled, ESD? lol
Of course. I am more than happy to share my knowledge and kid shanking skills with you. What's that? No CPS I did not say kid shanking skills, I said kid loving skills!
lol! You are a woman with a mission.
HS recc'd a book for me when I do get KU, which I've already bought in fact.
It's called "Let's panic about babies" and it's absolutely hysterical, but littered with practical advice too.
