What size in J Crew?
I am eyeing a few of their city shorts. I wear a size 4 in their No.2 pencil skirts... never tried on their pants, (and wear a size 6 in Limited Drew dress pants).
Should I get a size 4 or 6 in shorts?
eta: I am also eyeing a pair of ballet flats there. I am a Toms ballet flat size 6, normally 6.5 in 9 West ballet flats. Would I be a 6 or 7 (no half sizes) in J Crew as well?

It really depends on the pants. I wear a 6 in their chino shorts which I find pretty TTS. I wear a 4 in the cafe capri and 4 in skirts. I wear a 6 in BR pants. I feel that J.Crew's tops are more vanity sized than their bottoms.
