Tuesday night - Maggie had been chewing on her foot all night, and even with repeated checks I could find nothing wrong. We assumed she had either already worked out a sliver or something herself and now was babying it and had made a habit. We put her in the cone of shame to try to break said habit before it really started.
Yes, she climbed into my lap and would not leave.

I had her sleep with me that night to try to keep her calm. At some point she needed to rearrange or wanted off the bed, but couldn't judge the edge and FELL OFF on her face! I scrambled out of bed, she's crying, and then FREAKS OUT thrashing and whacking her head against the bed and wall. Oh it was terrible. So off the cone comes and we all go back to bed because sleep is more important than the foot at the moment.
Wednesday morning, cone goes back on and stays until today. I would take it off a few times a day so she could scratch and roll around, and she would immediately start messing with the foot again. Sigh.
My mom suggested maybe I should just let her chew on it because maybe if she gets it raw enough, it will hurt enough that she will stop. Insert eye roll from me. Right mom. Since my dog is that smart. Needless to say, this morning I was exasperated with her banging the cone around and scraping paint of the walls, so I just took it off and figured if it went on this long she probably needed a vet visit anyway.
I come home after work today, and she has chewed it quite a bit. I start really looking at it and what do you know... HUGE SPLINTER. It must have broken off and so I couldn't see it before, but she chewed it down enough that I could. I got it out and it was like instant relief on her face. She hasn't even licked it since I got it out.
I made my poor baby sit around with a splinter for FOUR DAYS! WAHHHH ![]()
Re: puppy mom fail
Awww Reg is sending his girlfriend hugs and kisses!!
You're not a bad puppy mama, trust me! The babes keep us on our toes, don't they?
You're a good mama! Sometimes there's just no way to see those things and it was probably good for her to wear the cone. She could have chewed at it and gotten it super swollen and infected but maybe the time in the cone allowed her body to work at it... either way so glad all is well again! The pic of her in your lap is priceless!
