Anyone been a pallbearer?

I just found out that they're trying to give all the grand kids jobs at the funeral. Due to our amazing strongs, my sister and I have been selected as pallbearers. Have any of you err done this?  DH did once but can't remember any specifics and says he doesn't think it was that heavy.

Guys, am I gonna drop it?  There's going to be 6 of us so no, right?

I am well in to my Friday evenin libations and now I'm kind of drunkenly freaking out about screwing this up. =/

Re: Anyone been a pallbearer?

  • Just hope it's an aluminum/metal casket. DH picked out a nice wooden one for his mom; funeral was yesterday. They had 8 guys (6 and 2 teens), and it was ridiculously heavy. They managed though.
  • You won't drop it. There are plenty of people to distribute the weight.

I've never been a pallbearer, in my super old fashioned family, it's usually all men. But a casket isn't necessarily that heavy, especially in the way it's carried. You couldn't drop it single handedly if you tried, because other people will have their hands on deck, so to speak.

  • All of the funerals I've been to in the last (at least) 5 years barely require pallbearers to lift/carry anything.  Most everything is done with a cart that you help wheel and then you lift a little bit to move the casket to and from the hearse.

Obviously I don't know if this will be the case for you, but I think the odds are good.

  • I did for my grandma. She was a very small woman, but it wasn't heavy or difficult at all. There were 6 of us.

  • at the funeral of one of my students, six of her best friends were the pallbearers.  they were all teenaged girls, and most of them were weeping hysterically.  it was one of the saddest things i've ever seen.  but nobody dropped anything.  you'll be fine.
  • I was a pallbearer for my aunt. No one dropped anything, but it was a lot heavier than I expected.  Don't worry, you'll be fine.
