Movies on Planes

Apparently I've been out of the movies-on-planes loop. I usually just read my Kindle, but I had a longer than usual flight (flew from the west coast instead of the Midwest) and decided to check out some alternatives.

There were tons of classic movies--Casablanca, etc. How new is this? (Or how out of the loop am I?)

For the curious among you, why yes, I did watch Sound of Music-- and was be-bopping my head to 'doe rae me' like a crazy person. *shrug*

Re: Movies on Planes

  • I've been flying Iberia and if you're in Economy, they tend to show one or two newish releases (no seat-back entertainment). In Business, you have personal screens with TV shows, games, and new releases.

The thing that sucks is when it's a sad movie. I saw "Up" flying Lufthansa a few years back and had to stop the movie because I started to bawl. Discreetly, but very definitely crying too hard to be in public.

  • We always fly Qatar Airways and they always have a nice range of movies - from classics to new releases. Usually, I just try to watch whatever is the longest, so I can be distracted for the whole 13 hour flight :-P

When I saw 'Up,' we had to stay in the theater while the credits rolled so I could pull myself together. It wasn't a small tear here or there--it was ugly, red-faced, weird noises sobbing.

I still can't watch it without bawling. Actually, I'm welling up just thinking about that farking adventure book...

I felt pathetic. I don't want to know what my seat mate thought about me.

  • I saw Citizen Kane for the first time in my life last year on a plane. I'm glad they had the classic options. I wasn't at all interested in any of the new releases.
  • My standards have risen a lot in the past few years as to what I expect in terms of in-flight entertainment. I've become an IFE snob, and I actually go out of my way to pay a bit more so I don't have to take the Stuttgart-Atlanta flight because I know the plane only has the cabin screens.

I am also disgruntled when there are individual screens but no on-demand, when everyone still watches the same movie at the same time. Really, I'm a snob now. Embarrassed

  • We just flew to the States and back, and both flights (on on United, one on Air Canada) had in-flight entertainment systems in the seat-back with a huge selection of on-demand movies, tv shows, and even games.   I didn't have to break the kindle out once:-)

  • Yeah, mine were United too. I was honestly impressed with the choices.
  • They've been doing it for as long as they've had on-demand seat back videos in economy. I know they had it in business class earlier, but I never fly business.

If you ever fly Air NZ to Auckland you can watch the whole Lord of the Rings Trilogy on the plane.

See, I've never seen this good of a selection. I've definitely browsed the movies before, but it used to be that there were maybe 6-10 options and a few tv shows. There were probably 50+ movies alone on this flight.

And they also had the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I'm not sure you could have watched all of them in this flight time.

I definitely remember on-demand seat back screens ~10 years ago that didn't have classic options in economy. Just 4 or 5 recent releases. I'm sure there were some airlines offering it back then, but not every carrier offered it when they started using on-demand entertainment systems.
