It was disgusting but I'm thankful for it
I bought my usual hummus brand from the grocery last week and there was a part of a cracker with bite marks in it buried in the middle of the tub. As near as I can figure someone at the factory was tasting hummus off the line and dropped their used cracker in the vat. Gross. I threw it away and am never buying that brand again. So I made hummus myself for the first time tonight. It's so much better than anything I've ever bought premise and amazingly creamy. Why did it take a used cracker in my hummus to get me to try making it on my own?
Re: It was disgusting but I'm thankful for it
Making your own hummus is super easy if you have a blender. Tastier and cheaper, too!
That is so gross.
I have never made it either but really should, I know it is easy!
It took moving to Spain to get me to make my own hummus. I haven't found tahini and it tastes alright without tahini or peanut butter.
Sadly, the cost of buying a new food processor in France is way higher than buying pre-packaged hummus for the year we live here. But at home, yes, it's easy to make and delicious.
I'm going to try not to think about that cracker thing next time I eat hummus.
mmmm....even after that story I am craving (home made, not store bought) hummus! If you find a good recipe please share
Yes.
I use this recipe from food.com. I don't use raw garlic though..if I use garlic at all, I roast it first. You can also use roasted red peppers (the jarred kind are fine). And I kind of tweak the amounts to get it to taste the way I like. You can skimp on the olive oil and add liquid from the chickpeas, and use peanut butter instead of tahini. There are recipes on food.com that use neither tahini nor olive oil, but I've never tried those. Also, I use an immersion blender because it makes me feel like I'm actually on the food network. I also narrate while I cook.....(yes, I'm a nerd).
1 (12 ounce) can chickpeas , rinsed and drained1/3 cup tahini paste1/4 cup lemon juice (or to taste)1/4 cup olive oil3 -4 minced garlic cloves , minced (or to taste)salt and pepperThis made me lol. Love it
How do you roast your garlic?
No, my 4 year old son does not like it either.
Do you have any Turkish supermarkets around where you live? They're all over the place here in Germany, and the tahini is abundant.
You aren't alone. I HATE chickpeas in any form. The flavor, the texture ... plus they make my tongue and mouth itchy.
Not at all. Up here in Semi-rural Spain, we're kind of limited in the international foods department. I did see a recipe for making my own tahini though, I've just been too lazy
The hummus tasted fine without it.
I am seriously addicted to tahini. I have no idea why.
Yes! Black bean hummus is delicious.
Ok, now I am doubly sad about my lack of food processor and the fact that I haven't found canned black beans here in France, only dry. Oh, Goya, how I miss you and your empire that spreads across the United States. I don't have it in me to make black beans from scratch without a pressure cooker.
Man, I am addicted to kitchen gadgets!
