I'm scurrred to bid on Priceline. I need feedback!

I want to bid on a mid size rental car for 6 days out of Newark. I've never bid before.

how was your experience? How much under the going rate did you bid and did you get it?

TIA!

Re: I'm scurrred to bid on Priceline. I need feedback!

  • Since Priceline only partners with the big rental chains, I often feel safer bidding through Priceline than going with a published rate from a company I don't recognize. Also, I usually end up with Hertz, Avis, etc. which tend to have newer fleets than Enterprise, so when the Enterprise is cheaper than the others, I'll sometimes bid up to the published Enterprise rate, figuring I'll still get a better deal.

In terms of how much to bid, I'll usually check the unnamed-company rates on Hotwire and bid slightly below that. You can also search for your location on the BetterBidding car rental forums to see what other people have successfully bid.

  • I feel totally safe bidding with price line. Especially for the cars. They only go with the major companies. I have used priceline for hotels a number of times. Never a issue with the results I received from bidding.

Recently I bid on a SUV for our Key West trip in a few weeks. There was some site that suggested doing my research first and pricing it out on Hotwire. Then take 40-50% off this price. Normal price for a SUV is about $70 per day (per Hotwire) so I took this number and discounted it by 40%. My bid was one for $28 dollars a day. (total $314 for the week)...best deal I found on what I was looking for.

  • We have only good experiences bidding on rental cars through Priceline. Like the previous posters, I look at Hotwire and bid under that. I also go to several big company websites to look at their rates for a comparison.
  • I booked a room on Priceline for my mom and it was awesome! I did like PP did and price shopped before I bid, but I ended up getting her a $90 a night room for $53 including tax.  I will definately use it again
  • Do eeet!!  Priceline is awesome.  I've never used it for rental cars though, but for hotels my strategy is to go ridiculously low (4 star for 50 bucks in a major city) at first.  If it's accepted, great!  If not, go up by 5 or 10 dollars until you get one.

I mean, your only objective is to get what you think is a great deal, right?  And it's not like in person haggling where you have to feel like you're insulting the person by going too low ("You want 30 dollars for this hand carved thing that took you all day?  I'll give you 3 dollars!") - it's just a computer program.  So start really low and you may be surprised at what you end up getting.

  • Awesome stuff ladies!

    Thank you!
