I feel like a failure

The marathon is 3 weeks away and today I was supposed to do my first and only 20 miler. But I'm used to running in 30 - 40* weather and today was more like 50 - 60 *. I only ran 14 miles and it felt like crap.

I'm going to try again for 20 next weekend and start earlier so it's hopefully cooler. But what if it's this warm on race day? :'(

Re: I feel like a failure

  • Don't feel like a failure.

If it 50-60 you will suck it up and finish.  If you plan on running over the summer you better get used to it now.... it is supposed to be in the 80's here today... summer is coming!

Edit: reading comprehension failure.  I don't know if I would try and run 20 2 weeks out either.

  • Glad you got 14 in at least. I would be hesitant to attempt 20 again that close to the race. The taper is an important part of training. You can't risk being burned out on race day. Is this your first? If it's "warm" on race day you'll drink more water, slow down, and survive.
  • Don't worry about it: For my first marathon, I only completed an 18 miler and had a similar debacle for my 20 miler. I survived and completed the marathon. You're not a failure. It happens to the best of us.

Also, I would just taper as planned.
