Do any of you have mix and match dishware?

I need new dishware..oh for the past 6 months.

I can't find a set a) I like b) I can afford.

I'm a bit on the eclectic/mix and match/funky/weird side anyways, so I'm thinking about buying sale pieces I like in coordinating pattern/color. I also seem to like pieces of sets but not the whole thing. I think it's a good option for us because when my dishes break (and they will) I won't have to stress about finding a matcing replacement.

I know it's a very casual look, but I have like one serious dinner party a year if that...the rest it's paper plates and the grill.

So if you did this, a) do you like it? b) What did you mix and match (Please describe or PIP).

My  worry is that it'll look my cupboard came courtesy of grandma's garage sale and I want something more intentional than that. How did you do it?

Re: Do any of you have mix and match dishware?

  • I did a few years ago! I loved it because nothing was terribly expensive so I kept buying different patterns for different looks and didn't have to worry about the cost. I went the vintage/goodwill route- everything had the same/very similar creamy background color, and I bought a full set of dinner plates/ bowls/ salad plates/ etc in each different pattern with similar colors (most were orange and green, with a little yellow) I ended up falling in love with one pattern in particular and donated all of the mix and match stuff to collect more of the gingham Vernonware that I love. Still have it all! We did get a nicer C&B set for our wedding but I still break out the Vernonware in the summer and fall

(looks like this, though I have pieces in orange/green, green/yellow and yellow brown) http://www.colling.com/picture_gallery/plaids/gingham/gingham_14-inch_chop_plate.jpg

  • I don't, but if I was going to, I would do Fiestaware... a classic choice.

google image search has some good examples of how all the colors go together.

  • i don't for entertaining; I just a have a simple cream/khaki set from BBB that I use with company. it's nice because it goes with any sort of decor I would wish to decorate the table with.

for everyday, DH and i each brought a set of cheap ceramic plate (his red, mine ugly red) sets from target and seven years in they are still going strong, so no sense in replacing them.

  • I don't but I keep thinking about it. Right now, we have a very practical, very boring set of white Crate and Barrel plates and it so does not fit my style right now.

If I were going to do the mix and match route, I would hit up thrift stores, garage sales and Goodwills to find dishes in one color scheme - my home is going in a gray, turquoise and yellow direction so that it what I would look for.

Thanks! They've added so many cool colors since we got ours. I want to get more!

  • I have a set of dark blue and a set of white with the same blue around the rims.  I got them on super clearance at Target 6 years ago and they're still in great shape.  I actually kind of realy like the idea of mixing and matching dishes in different patterns with the same color scheme.

  • I vote for Fiestaware for you, as you can buy it open stock and matching colors. I have blue and green.

  • I love love love dishes. Some women buy shoes or purses; I indulge on dishes.

I have one set of fine china, Wedgwood India. It's a pretty complex pattern, so I draw single colors from it to change the look of my table, mixing in all red glass, or blue glass, or white trimmed in gold, etc. depending on what look I want. I don't usually set the table all in china (not that I could afford to), but I use those pieces to accent the other, simpler dishes.

I also have seasonal dishes, a set of stoneware for spring, summer, porcelain for fall, and ceramic for winter. They all have different seasonally appropriate patterns. I can mix and match other basic pieces into these as needed.

I'm always on the lookout at garage sales and buy whole sets or individual pieces whenever I see something I like for cheap. Antique stores are good places to look, too.

  • I also have fiestaware.  I have ten place settings, all different colors.  I love the mix and match look of it.
  • I do this!  And not with Fiestaware lol.  My plates are plain white from Pottery Barn and then I pick up/rotate colorful pieces for the other stuff.

  • Another vote for fiestaware.  I recently started collecting their turquoise ones and love them!!  I have noticed that the color is a little different on the older ones, but I'm ok with that since half the fun is finding them at estate sales and such.

  • Mine are all white C&B plates, but I thought that going with all one shape/group was a bit plain, so I've got round dinner plates with a wide edge, square salad sized plates, round bowls and brightly colored appetizer plates.  I have red and blue to mix up depending on the time of year and my mood.  I love clean white lines, but I think that having the different shapes/styles keeps it interesting!
