Grocery shopping

Every time DH and I go grocery shopping together we have this disagreement, he insists on putting the bananas in one of those plastic bags for the fruit/veg.  I think it's a waste of a bag because the bananas are stuck together and we obviously don't eat the skin. He insists that they will get dirty otherwise. I do bag the other fruits and veggies because they are not stuck together or they have an edible skin.

Does anyone else do this is or is my husband the only weirdo? Any other husbands have strange shopping quirks?

Re: Grocery shopping

  • I have never heard of anyone doing that. Does he think te bananas are going to fall in a mud puddle on the way home? I hate shopping with my H. Whenever he goes he ends up filling the cart with junk we don't need and probably won't end up eating.
  • Who cares if they get dirty, you don't eat the skin! I don't know anyone who does that!

  • He's a weirdo for sure!

A related note: I hate using those bags, but I see no alternative.  I don't use plastic grocery bags, but load up on those produce bags that are essentially the same thing.  I feel Mother Earth weep when I stock up on tomatoes or onions.  What are my alternatives?

Crate and Barrel has these little netted zipper pouches for produce. I want them so bad. Might give myself a present next week. 5 bags for $10 which isn't too bad.

And I agree I use my own bags for carrying out my groceries but it drives me insane using the little plastic produce bags. In general I try not to use them at all.

  • I just put them on top of my market bag. The vendor tries to give me a bag but whats the point. Even though our plastic grocery bags here are supposedly eco friendly and biodegradeable. My hubby wouldn't allow it anyway, he is a earth friendly person.

  • I saw a middle aged man once who had every single thing in a carefully tied closed plastic bag.

I say where do you think it's been before it got to the shop if you're worried about dirt?

Just don't use them. Unless you're buying more than five of something, it's just as easy to pick them up as they are.

  • I know it's weird but he is so adamant about it! Luckily he doesn't come shopping with me too often. I remind him every time that we don't eat the skin so it doesn't matter but he still insists. Crazy boy!

I do bring reusable bags to bring all the groceries home in though.

  • I rarely use the produce bags for any of the produce. So, definitely not with bananas.

  • I use the bags, but only because I get really creeped out by the thought of anything I'm going to touch immediately before eating (like a banana peel) touching ANY PART of a shopping cart.  Those things are nasty.   Chances are I'm going to put my bananas right on top of where some kids leaky diaper just was, or a snotty-nosed toddler, or a drippy package of raw meat.

  • I'm grossed out by bananas :O. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person on earth who hates them.

  • Here, you have to weigh and price each fruit/veg that's not pre-packed. This means one trip to the supermarket brings home a lot of little bags. I've never liked it, but haven't found a way around it.

    This is me too.

DH is obsessed with bananas. He has to by they everytime he goes to the store - doesn't matter if we already have them, nope. Must.buy.bananas.

Re: the produce bags. I have these cool mesh bags with a drawstring on them. I got them at my Kroger and they were like 3 in a pack for $2. I thought they were pretty common, but I'm guessing not.

  • Tesco does this with our delivery. Even with our bagless order, where I have to unpack crates lickety split for hte driver to take back, all fruit and veg is individually bagged. But I definitely thinkit's odd and wasteful.

Before we started getting a veg box, I'd avoid bags in teh store, but got check out people trying to bag things for me, to be helpful. Some stores are 'bette'r than others at this- M&S is very gooda t bagless shopping, but Morrisons is obsessive bout bags...

How much do those weigh in comparison to the plastic produce bags?  I guess what I'm rally asking is how much does it add to the cost when you weigh it at check out?

And yes, with the food prices here, that little bit would make a difference over time.

ETA:  I wonder if I could make those ...

I don't know the difference in weight. I usually self check out and the one store I go you can pick the container it's weighed in.  I don't buy a lot of produce at once and usually I want the bags for when I'm packing my groceries after check out so the tomatoes don't fall down into some crevasse and get mushy.
