U.S. Tax Question for Those with Kids

Has anyone successfully e-filed their return while claiming the child care tax credit for expenses related to a nanny that does not have a SSN or tax ID?  We were trying to use H&R Block's online program, but it does not allow you to use "LAFCP" for a nanny that is living abroad and not a U.S. citizen or resident.  It took until we got to the very end of our return to discover this.

Any suggestions for alternate online programs is appreciated.  We've been using H&R Block for about 5 years now, but it looks like we won't be using them anymore.

Re: U.S. Tax Question for Those with Kids

  • When I tried to use the H&R Block e-return last year I failed miserably, so I'm no help. My income situation is really complicated, so I couldn't get the information in right. Have you considered writing to H&R Block's customer service (if they have one) to ask how to do it or recommend they make it an option?

  • I have no idea if this will help as we don't have kids and therefore don't have this issue, but in our experience (before we stopped doing out own taxes all together when it was rolled into H's contract) is that the full version of Turbo Tax is actually really good when it comes to being an American abroad.
  • Yeah, we called customer service and they confirmed that their software doesn't take this into consideration and we'd have to paper file if we used them.  Publius, it seems from some searching online that Turbo Tax might work.  Now we just have to re-enter all of our stuff since we were right at the end when this glitch was discovered.
