I am making curtains for the nursery using the Simplicity 5600 pattern (simple tab top curtains if the link doesn't work for you). Since they are for the nursery and the room gets a LOT of sun I want to add blackout (BO) fabric to the back. I got this fabric.
I cut out all the fabric (not the BO fabric though) for the curtains and just realized that I'm not sure how to add the BO fabric since it isn't part of the pattern and there is no curtain lining in the pattern.
I am thinking that I could wait until I finish the curtain and then just sew a rectangle of the BO onto the back (folding it under at the edges so that it looks finished and actually hides the back hems of the curtain but you may see the seam on the front of the curtain, which isn't a huge deal because it is a patterned fabric and I don't think it would be too obvious)
or I could somehow sew the BO fabric on to the fabric before I do all the curtain hemming but I worry that it will bunch if it isn't the perfect size.
the last option I thought of was creating a second curtain out of the BO fabric and putting that behind the curtain but that seems like a lot of work if I could do one of the other options... or another option that you suggest!
What would you do?
Also do I need to use a different needle for the blackout fabric? I was thinking maybe a denim needle but I'm not sure. I've never used it before.
(I am about to run out to a brunch and planned on sewing when I get home. If I do not respond that is why, I will certainly check back and answer any questions that might be asked before I start!!!)
thanks everyone!
Re: Altering curtain pattern w/ blackout fabric- Help please!
I've never sewn with that material (or even seen it, honestly
, but, there's a little info on it on the manufacturer's site. I was thinking needle holes might be an issue, and I guess it's true- there are some suggestions for dealing with them.

I would definitely back the panel fabric in a way that incorporates the bo fabric into the construction. It's not washable, though- so, if your main fabric is, I might look for a way to make it work separately.
Thanks. The Bo fabric is dry clean only so I was thinking I'd just dry clean them if necessary.
I'll have to look into the nylon needle. I'm not sure I can avoid the holes completely and the panels are a good bit bigger than the window so I'm hoping it won't be a big deal. I know it won be pitch black but we also have a blind on the window to help. I'll Use the tips though!!
