Sewing tip that I hope you never need to use

Last Friday my 6 year old grandson fell out of a two story window (climbed up to see if he could see his school from the window, leaned to get a better look and the screen fell out).....thankfully, his only injuries were breaks in his left wrist and elbow.  PSA: Put locks on windows when you have kids.  He knew better (even told all of the rescue/police/medical personnel that his mom had told him not to do that 'hundreds of times') but in the moment, he wondered and did it anyway.

Because of the elbow break, the cast makes it really difficult to get shirts on and off, especially his polo shirts for school.  He really wanted to be able to wear his uniform shirts, so I opened the side seam and sewed snap tape to each side.  I sewed it so that the snaps wound up as close to the seamline as possible, and tacked one side to the sleeve band and the underarm so that the tape is flat when it is snapped.  I left the side seam attached at bottom, so that I didn't have to deal with the hem.

Snap tape from the drapery department is much less expensive than the snap tape from the notions department....$3.99 per yard compared to $9.99 py.  I just bought the white tape and dyed some to match his navy blue shirt.  It doesn't match exactly, but it doesn't show.  We used red marker to color the white line that showed on his red shirt, and the white didn't even stand out on the orange shirt so we left it.

The snaps don't come undone so easily that it is like a stripper shirt,Wink and he does need help snapping it, but it looks normal and does the job, and once the cast comes off they can take it off and sew up the side seam.
