Washington DC area restaurants

Looking for some suggestions on places to eat lunch/dinner in the WashDC area. We're staying in Rockville, MD and will be there for 1 week. Non-picky eaters, not looking for fancy or upscale. Thanks!

Re: Washington DC area restaurants

  • Rockville Town Center has some good places to eat.  There's a Gordon Biersch for good burgers and beers, La Tasca for tapas and good sangria.  Then there are some other typicals like Buffalo Wild Wings, Noodles & Co., Cosi, California Tortilla, etc.

Not sure where you'll be in Rockville, if you're near town center or further north, you might go to The Kentlands in Gaithersburg for really good crab cakes at O'Donnell's.

If you're looking for recs in DC proper, some of my favorites are Cava Mezze, Jaleo, Rosa Mexicano, and Fado's.  All except Cava are right at Gallery Place/China Town, which is easy to get to on the red line metro.

  • For an inexpensive meal at a DC institution: Ben's Chili Bowl (located in the U Street corridor).  A pricier famous DC eatery: Old Ebbitt Grill (about a block from the White House).  Matchbox, located in Chinatown, is another nice place for burgers, pizzas, and other casual food.
  • Ditto some of the other suggestions, and here are some other ones:

Graffiato in Chinatown - it is owned by Mike Isabella of Top Chef fame

Ted's Bulletin (Eastern Market metro stop) - I just went for the first time with some friends last week and we all liked it. They have homemade pop tarts that were yummy and my friend loved her milkshake. They serve breakfast all day, but for lunch and dinner there are sandwiches, entrees, salads, etc.

Zaytinya which is around the Chinatown area as well

  • A bit further south from downtown Rockville on Wisconsin Ave is Matchbox - a FANTASTIC pizza/American restaurant. It's not particularly fancy but the food and ambience are definitely worth the visit.

  • I got an awesome suggestion to check out one or two of the Jose Andres restaurants....

We are going next month, but them menus look awesome!

  • If you just want a quick lunch near the Mall, there is a food court in the Ronald Reagan building.  It's nothing fancy, but it's cheaper than eating at the museums: http://www.itcdc.com/explore.php?p=13

If you do want to eat at one of the museums, the American Indian museum has a very good cafeteria.

Food trucks are a very popular lunch option in DC - and most are pretty tasty.  You can usually get a meal for around $12.  Their locations change every day, but you can find them here:  http://foodtruckfiesta.com/

  • Taro Sushi on 17th & P. Very, very good!  Also the Beacon Hotel has a great brunch.

  • my husband's parents lived across Rockville Ctr until last year. His favotire restaurant in the world is Rio Grande, which is a chain. I like it OK, a bit gluttonous for me, but he always had to go there. Great fajitas.

I second Matchbox.  I would consider it more of upscale casual food -- pizzas, but creative ones, fish dishes, excellent burgers, etc.

  • We, the Pizza and Good Stuff Eatery are my two suggestions. Near Capitol Hill.
  • i live near Rockville and commute to DC everyday. are you renting a car or metroing? you can metro down to the city pretty easily but for some of these suggestions (matchbox, o'donnell (which i wouldn't recommend) you would need a car.

i would estimate a 20-25 minute or a bit longer metro ride on the Red Line from Rockville to the city proper.  prob 45 minutes to Capital Hill.
