How to make a dress longer?

I am known for buying dresses and turning them into shirts because I like the pattern or something about it but are too short to wear them as a dress.  Is there something I can do to make a dress that is too short appear longer?  I am in FL so tights aren't an option and I don't like the look of a dress and leggings.  Maybe like a slip of some kind of getting a solid color fabric and adding it to the bottom or something?  I got this dress from AE over the weekend and while it would be okay to wear to the pool or beach I kind of wanted to wear it to work with a jacket and some cute sandals but if I bend forward you can basically see my cheeks lol.  Any ideas/pics of what I could do?

Re: How to make a dress longer?

  • For this dress you could add material to the bottom, I'd probably add a round of the dark blue and then another round of the light/bright blue so that it doesn't look as much like you're just trying to make it longer.

  • add a wide ruffle to the bottom.
  • I don't know if it's your style, but I have a slip with lace ruffles along the hem that add a good 3-5 inches. They also add volume so it doesn't work for everything, but that's what I do.  You could take it to a seamstress and ask her to pick a coordinating fabric and add it to the bottom. I'd just stay as simple as possible since that print is already so busy.
  • I would get a matching navy material and add a section to the hem. You could do it straight, or have it gathered to make it look like a ruffle, which I think would look cool with this dress style, since it has a ruffle at the neckline already, it would look like it was made that way.

  • Although I like the dress as it is, but if you wish to make it longer then can add up some fabric which is complimentary with the dress or add a nice frill at the bottom.
