If today was your very first day at the gym...

What would you be doing and for how long? Elliptical? Treadmill? Weights?

Lets say your long term goal is to loose 50 lbs, but for now you're just trying to start a routine.

 Thanks for your help.

Re: If today was your very first day at the gym...

  • Depending on my fitness level, probably light cardio (treadmill walk or elliptical) aim for 20-30 minutes and stretch afterwards.

I'm also a big fan of 10 mins on 3 different machines - elliptical, treadmill, bike-

  • I would ask a trainer or desk attendant for an orientation, so they could show me how to safely use all the equipment, show me around, explain the rules, etc.

Then I'd try a few things to see what I like doing and what I hate doing.  Then I'd continue doing what I liked.  (Exception: I would not start out with weights unless I knew proper form and/or had a spotter or trainer assisting me.)

    Good luck!

  • I would probably just walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes.  I wouldn't try and do too much.  I would then evaluate how I feel the next time and adjust from there.

  • Great advice, thank you.

  • Walk on the treadmill for 30-45 minutes at a comfortable pace, just getting slightly out of breath. With a GREAT music playlist.

This.  Or maybe even ask to book a session with a trainer to help you learn how to safely use the equipment and help you develop a plan for your weight loss goals.  Have fun at the gym! :)

  • I'd do the treadmill or elliptical.  20-30 minutes.

  • I'd do 30-60 minutes of cardio (elliptical, bike, treadmill, etc.) I would also purchase some training sessions (my gym offers one free one when you sign up to get you acquainted with the facilities) so that I could start a weight routine safely. Or, I would take some classes (if they're offered at your gym) and tell the teacher it was my first time and ask him/her to keep an eye on me for form, etc. When I first started working out, I always did the elliptical and a weight class (these were usually called Body Sculpting or Total Body Conditioning.)

    Good luck getting started!

  • Way back when I joined a gym for the first time and I needed to loose 50 pounds I stuck to the exercise bikes and walking on a track.  As I got more comfortable and in a routine I added the elliptical or a group class.  It took me a couple of years to try weights.  I say do whatever you want to try, keep moving for 30 minutes, and go back within 48 hours.   I always told myself I could stop something that was too hard, as long as I exercised for at least 30 minutes.  Some days I lasted 5 minutes on a bike, etc, but then I made myself commit to walking for another 25.  I worked myself up to a full 30 minutes of good, sweaty activity and even added more time.

Also, I enjoyed water aerobics.  I didn't have to get my hair wet or wear goggles (I have terrible vision), and nobody in my class looked like a super model.

  • I do way better with group exercise than I do on my own, so I'd probably find a boot camp/spinning/zumba class that fits my schedule and go to that. I'd let the instructor know it was my first time just in case there are techniques, etc. that need to be shown pre-class, and then I'd cross my fingers that another newbie showed up so I wouldn't feel so silly.

  • Elliptical.  It's my go-to "easy" workout.  When I first started working out I walked in my neighborhood until it got too hot last summer.  Then I got a hand-me-down elliptical.  It's a great, no impact, cardio workout.

Now that I'm a little further into my weight loss/fitness journey, I joined a gym for weights and personal training.  Also for the treadmill when it is too hot, wet, cold, etc to run outside (I'm a wimp).

  • I went, took your advice and didn't over do it. I like the 'go within 48 hour rule'. Again, thanks for your help. I feel like I can really do it.

More questions soon, I'm sure :)
