Tell me about paint

J is the process of doing some minor remodeling/redecorating (paint, floors, maybe new cabinet fronts, etc.) Anyway, it's time to choose paint. Neither of us know jackshiit about paint. What is a good but inexpensive brand? What about primer? Gloss, hi-gloss, wha?

Also, what about colors? He mentioned grey, but he has a new brown leather sofa and I don't think that will work. I tend to like more warm colors and think he should paint the wall that runs the length of the formal living, kitchen and den an orange, kind of like Bob used. I'm sure he'll hate that idea.

For the record, I don't live there but likely will within a year or so and he has asked for my help.

Re: Tell me about paint

  • All the painters we spoke to said to use Benjamin Moore though I don't know why. We ended up liking a lot of their higher end colors (aura or affinity or something like that). Yes they are a little pricier ($45ish per gallon) but are paint and primer in one and are easy to wipe down or magic erase if a certain person decides to draw on a wall with crayons.

Ive heard good things about Sherwin Williams too.

Eh. Not for awhile. I like my space. But yeah, it seems to be going that direction.

  • I just used Valspar + to paint the nursery. I liked it, but it was kind of spendy.  It's zero VOC and mold/mildew resistant.  The guy at lowes swore that it had primer in it, so I didn't need primer, but he was a lying liar, and I needed two coats to get good coverage.

The grey we used in there is just lovely, and I kind of want to paint the rest of my house that color now.  Ok, really, just the second floor.  It was called notre dame.  I'm not sure how it would look with a brown couch though...

  • Don't bother with anything but Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams.

Home Depot and Lowes will tell you their paint is equal but it's just not.

Is J the guy you were dating for a little while and then split up briefly because he had issues to work through?  Or was that the guy before him?

  • That was him, Cali. I've known and dated him off/on for over two years. It's definitely on now.
