Women with jobs buy groceries and gas also
I keep seeing discussions about the "Ann Romney never worked" comment and a common retort is that SAHM know better than anyone what groceries and gas cost. They may know what the costs are, but so do women with jobs. I keep waiting for someone to say that almost all women buy groceries and gas also, so why would SAHM know "better" what things cost and why won't anyone challenge the statement? Are people so intimidated about the SAHM vs. moms with jobs issue that they won't state a simple truth?
ETA: I don't think it matters whether or not a woman has a job or stays home with children. The opportunities should be there with equal pay and respect.
Re: Women with jobs buy groceries and gas also
No, silly. Working moms (apparently this has become shorthand for liberal) ignore their families. They don't cook, they buy them fast food, with arugula on top. They don't know the price of groceries!
And because they're liberals, they're probably on public transportation or driving a prius.
Zeus and Bubba
Yeah, I don't think the statement is intended to say that SAHMs know better than working women about that. I think the point is to say that just because SAHMs may not have the same experience with the rough economy as working women, they are not shielded from the economy. SAHMs aren't getting laid off or taking furloughs, but that doesn't mean they don't feel the pinch.
This is just such a dumb phony mommy war issue.
Yep
exactly.
it's just a phrase... i think the proper phrase should have been "SAHM's know about prices as much as anyone else".... and I think you are focusing WAY too much on how it was phrased.
Or on a bike. Duh.
Also, because my husband is a man, there's no way he goes grocery shopping, stays at home with our kid, cooks meals and cleans. Because men can't.
It's true. I don't know how much our grocery budget is, and I never cook a single meal. I ride off into the sunrise on my liberal bike, cackling.
The end.
Well poor people are too tired, ignorant, downtrodden, put up and stupid to cook a decent meal.
Click me, click me!
the huge brouhaha over the random statement of some Democratic nobody who is neither employed by the DNC or an elected official is not a coincidence.
On the surface it's a stupid mommy war issue, but that's not the impetus behind this particular talking point.
Could also be that your average family with a SAHM generally follows a budget more closely than a family with 2 working parents. Maybe not in households with high incomes, but I know growing up with a SAHM my mom definitely spent more time clipping coupons and making meals stretch than your average household with more income does.
I don't have kids and we budget, but not to the same extent as a family where every penny really counts KWIM?
Except that the majority of families in which moms work are NOT high income families. Mom often works because mom HAS to work to pay bills and put dinner on the table. I'd wager that oftentimes (not always) there is a much thinner margin of error and more penny counting in families in which both parents work. There seems to be this notion that families in which women work are composed of dual high-earners, when in fact it's often precisely the opposite.

SAHMs are a huge target audience for all daytime TV shows. You piss them off - you just screwed your network over. Best to error on the side of pissing people off who don't watch the majority of your shows in the first place.
Have you seen how career women are still portrayed on soap operas?
Specifically, Michele Bachmann said exactly this on Meet the Press yesterday.
And my response to the TV was also, "Wait, who DOESN'T buy groceries?"

Right? On one hand, the GOP is saying that men care more about making money, and tend to earn more than women because of that. And on the other hand, they say that they don't actually care about budgeting or their finances, and leave things like grocery shopping and bill paying (you know, the boring stuff!) to their women folk. What? My husband is the one who buys milk (he drinks it, so when we shop - together - he's the one who gets more if he needs it), so if I needed to know the price of a half gallon on milk, I'd have to ask him.
