Maui vacationers -- help please

I'm planning a 5-7 day vacation for my family -- husband and 2 year old. We plan to leave from Los Angeles on May 22nd and return on May 29th.

I'm looking for any suggestions for booking (cheap) travel. The best I've come across is $679 pp for flight + car.  Any great websites that you used... I use the standard price compare websites (kayak, airfaredog,) and check daily for any low fares. I would like to stay in $500-$600 range per person.

Any tips, advice, booking strategies would be much appreciated!

  • Pandaonline.com usually has some decent packages, but from what I've been hearing airfare for Hawaii is high just like everywhere else right now.

We actually just booked a trip to Maui and found flights that were much cheaper than what we were used to in the past.  Surprisingly, the cheapest day to fly was Friday.  Plus, we were able to find a really good deal (just over $100 a night) on a 2 bedroom beachfront timeshare through either redweek.com or ebay.com (can't remember which we went with right now), so it ended up saving us.  This isn't really an option if you are traveling Tuesday-Tuesday since most timeshares only have weekend starts for the rentals.

I would definitely mess around with your dates.  Also, if you aren't set on that week, I'd move it back to the first week of June.  Memorial Day is a popular time to travel so I imagine flights would be more $$.  Just don't go past the middle of June since school gets out and travel to Hawaii increases (as do flight prices, from waht we could tell).

  • As someone who flys to Maui from Toronto, I think you've got a great price! For us its usually $900 pp for the flight, plus hotel.

That being said - I would try Expedia, Kayak, and a few individual airlines (Hawaiian Airlines or whatever they are called) to do some pricing.

We find renting a condo to be cheaper than a hotel for sure.

  • Hawaiian air has been flooding my inbox with specials.  Usually to the west coast is under 400pp, especially since you won't really be in high season.

Hotels... they're just going to be expensive.  Hotwire if you like.  Or vrbo.

  • Thanks for the help! We're stuck with the dates for travel, but will definitely look into your suggestions.
  • I would suggest you look into renting a condo in Maui. There are some beautiful options that are very wallet friendly, especially if you give up things like an ocean view. VRBO and HomeAway have lots of options and you might get lucky getting a break in price since the trip is so close. You can save a lot on food costs because of the kitchen in condos.

I'd book the car seperately to save money. For our honeymoon we really wanted a convertible, but if I was to visit the island with a child I'd do a hardtop to help protect their skin from the sun. Check BetterBidding.com to see what people are getting car rentals from Priceline for if you don't really care which company you go through. A friend of mine got a convertible for $19 a day that way a few years ago!

A really popular blog called YoungHouseLove just went to Maui with their young child, you might find their trip report and suggestions helpful. Doing a search in Google should turn up the website.
