Dutch INs.

have you received your tax refund back yet?

Ours was sent in by husband's company and "accepted" by the tax dudes.

How long can I estimate until we get the money?

OH and PS I love the Dutch government right now.  We are getting a CRAPLOAD back because I guess their stance is to take a lot out in the beginning and give it back to you later?

Re: Dutch INs.

  • Do you know what date they sent it in?

I think usually if you send it in before halfway through March, you should have it by June. If you file it by April 1st (as you should if you haven't asked for an extension) they're usually still pretty quick, but they're allowed to take up to the end of the year. If you file after April 1st and you hadn't asked for an extension, there's no telling, they legally have the right to have it take 2 years (or 5, not sure, usually it's fixed within a year and a half though).

And there are a couple of tax benefits that are awarded to everyone who works at least x days a year. It's usually calculated into each paycheck (so divided in 12). If you only had 6 Dutch paychecks, they still have to give you those other 'months' of benefits/deductions/whatever they are.

    Enjoy your crapload back!

  • April 4th.  So really?  It may take them 2 years to give my money back.  Does that really happen?   That will royally f us because we were counting on that money to pay our US taxes.  Dammit poor planning on our part.
  • It's legally due on April 1st unless you filed for an extension. Usually they will be quicker, but they're legally allowed to take 2 years. I've honestly never filed on time and only started asking for extensions the last few years and usually it would take about 3-4 months after I sent it in for them to finish it. At the same time I do have friends who had more complicated taxes (with them moving out of the country halfway through the year - so similar to you) where it took them a year and a half to finish up and give them their money back. So I'd count on anywhere between 3 and 18 months, if it's on the fast side, you're just really lucky (which you might be since one of the big 4 filed for you, right?) if it takes longer, you're f-ed.

  • I once filed for 2 years previous (this was some exceptional case because I moved to the US and then heard I could still file and actually get something back. So I filed for a year 2 years prior and once the right paper work was in I got the money back pretty fast (I think like 2 or 3 months and they added the interest of those 2 years to it). So I would just sit back and relax. Also, if you do get worried after a few weeks, call them. I have had pretty good experiences with the ppl that work there. But hey that was a few years ago and who knows if things have changed since then. Good luck!
