I am only 120 pages into The Handmaid's Tale (sp)

Wow! Such a scary concept to me. I think what strikes me is how the timeline seems really condensed, that this turn in power happens quickly.

Right now, I'm almost through the birth scene for Janine.  Gah~

  • That's something we talked a lot about at my book club - how quickly it progressed from normal society to that. We all agreed it was so alarming in today's political climate especially.
  • Make sure you read the historical notes at the end. They give a brief analysis of how the Constitution was suspended and how it progressed so quickly. It's from the POV of academics a century or so later, which I found to be a really interesting tool.
  • Thanks for the tip. I wish I could keep reading but I have to get back to work. Bleh. I am at the point where she is standing outside the Holy Rollers store and discovers there are other non believers.

  • I read this first in the early 90's and it didn't have as much impact on me then as it did now. It seemed surprisingly relevant today, considering when it was written.

Its not my favorite Atwood book for just reading, but I think its really important, and an interesting quick read.

  • I'm reading it right now too - I'm about 50 pages past the birth.  I'm so glad I picked this up - a very worthy read.

  • My husband and I continually wonder when we're going to be living that book.  It's happening right now, I swear.
