xp: Anybody use vinegar in place of fabric softener?

I'm really interested in starting this mainly to use less chemicals and also to save money. I do like my laundry to smell nice, so I've heard you can mix essential oil with the vinegar. Do you just put the vinegar in the spot that the softener usually goes? Any tips? Thanks!

Re: xp: Anybody use vinegar in place of fabric softener?

  • I do and I love it. I just splash some in the softener dispenser, and my clothes are nice and soft. I have never added a scent, but I'm not a big fan of scented things, so that's up to you.
  • I don't think I'd use essential oil. I'd be concerned that it'd leave oily marks on my clothes.

I've occasionally use essential oil in my vinegar/water mix for the floors and the oil stained the inside of the spray bottle that I use.

    Huh?

  • I use vinegar as a fabric softener (in a Downey ball because our washer doesn't have a dispenser), and I like the results. I used to mix in some lavender EO, but once it rinses out you can't smell it anyways so I stopped bothering.
  • I have done it as well with good results (without EO). It also helps keeping your washing machine clean. Apparently it is also very good to keep darks dark.
  • I use vinegar with essential oils. Though I have to say, the essential oils don't leave a scent at all once it goes through the wash. I just really dislike the smell of vinegar and I use EOs so the vinegar doesn't smell like vinegar when I open the bottle ;) And also for the antimicrobial properties of EOs, particularly Tea Tree oil.

I use EOs in all my cleaning products and have for years now, and I've never had it stain anything. In a jug of vinegar for fabric softener, I'll put maybe 30-40 drops of EOs in it. In a spray bottle, I use 20ish. EOs are so highly concentrated that you don't need much. If you do use it in a vinegar bottle, be sure to shake it up before pouring it in because the EOs will float up to the top and need to be mixed each time.
