NYC Restaurant Recommendations

Hello ladies -
DH and I will be travelling to NYC later this month for a quick getaway. We'll be staying in Manhattan and would like recommendations for any good restaurants. We tend to avoid mainly seafood places (due to my allergies) and are open to anything from casual cuisine to fine dining.

We were there last week and really enjoyed Cookshop (in Chelsea), Beauty and Essex (Lower East Side), and Norma's for breakfast.
When researching our trip, I found tons of recommendations on ChowHound.
Chowhound is a great resource.
There are thousands of restaurants in New York, and hundreds of good ones. Can you give us more parameters? It is really hard to make recommendations without more info because there are so many choices.

For the PP that asked for more specifics, we will be staying in the Midtown area, and really would prefer a few places that are more hole-in-the-wall but have solid food. And also, breakfast/brunch recs in particular would be great.
Also, has anyone been to Paradou in the Meatpacking District and can recommend something? I will be going to brunch there as part of a bachelorette party, and the food reviews seem to be very mixed.

There are actually a ton of solid hole-in-the-walls in NY. Most of my favorites are along those lines
If you like Italian food, Frank in the East Village definitely fits your specifications (though it is not in midtown).
Either John's on Bleecker Street or Arturo's on Houston are great old school wait service pizzerias that are hole-in-the-wall-y. Or Patsy's in East Harlem if you're up there (note: it is very different from the other Patsy's you'll see in the city -- I only recommend the East Harlem one.)
And maybe try Burger Joint in the Parker Meridien hotel? It is an unexpected hole-in-the-wall burger place hidden in the lobby of a nice hotel.
For breakfast/brunch, how about chicken and waffles at Amy Ruth's in Harlem? It is really neat, and you can take a nice (and much-needed) walk through Central Park afterwards.
