BC Question

Well I have posted this on another board I am not, but no one is answering - go figures. Currently I am on the depo shot and am thinking of going back to the pill because it's cheaper than the depo. I need to basically cut every corner I can at the momment. When you go from the depo to the pill, do you have a period right away or is it the next cycle went you start the 2nd cycle? Sorry just have so many questions - haven't been on the pills since 2006.

Re: BC Question

  • When I switched from Depo to the pill, it actually took several months before I got my period again. I think it really depends on each person.

This. Normally I think you start the pill before your depo is "over" so there's no lapse of coverage. So no, you wouldn't get a period right away.

  • Is it better on your body to take the pill vs. the depo?

Eh, my main concern with Depo is the osteoporosis risk associated with it. I loved Depo but I had been on it for almost 10 years and wanted to give my body a break. The pill actually screwed me up and I was getting my period every 15 days. I didn't stay on the pill very long. But again, everyone is different.

    I'd say yes.

I love depo, in theory, but its terrible for your bones, and a lot of women experience weight gain, depression, and reduced sex drive.

    This.

I found the pill to be harder on me than depo from a day-to-day standpoint. I had lots of negative side affects on 4 or 5 different pills. However, I wouldn't go back on depo because of the osteoporosis risk. I was on depo about 7 years, and near the end I broke a bone in my toe (tripping on a towel) and a few months later I cracked a rib (sliding into home base in a kickball game). I doubt that the two are linked, but considering I've suffered a bunch of falls, crashes, accidents and never fractured a bone before, it scared me to have two in a short amount of time.

Have you considered an IUD? Putting it in could be expensive, but then it's pretty much cost-free.

Also, I'm just charting now. It's free (other than the initial investment of the thermometer).

  • I second the IUD. If you have the money to pay up front, it's ridiculously cheap really. I think I paid about $245 for mine, and it's good for 10 years. I love it.

  • It totally depends on your body. Some have it harder with the pill while others have it harder with depo. I can't handle depo. It totally screws up my hormones (prepubescent levels for some while postmenopausal for others). After getting off depo for a couple months everything evened out. My body does better with the pill but really anything hormonal doesn't mesh well with me.

Also, try calling your insurance company about the IUD if you're worried about cost. My insurance sucks in a lot of ways but for some random reason they fully cover IUDs with no co-pay. I had to fight them tooth and nail to get a script for a generic antibiotic filled once but the IUD was no problem. If it isn't covered then you could try asking Planned Parenthood or another women's center if they could do a payment plan or offer scholarships. A friend got a scholarship from a church once for an IUD. It sounds crazy but at least she was able to get it.

  • I have heard about the IUD but that it hurts like hell?

I am going to PP tomorrow to see what else my options are.

The insertion wasn't too nice, but it was only bad for a day or so. Now I don't even think about it being there. Totally worth it.

ITA. The insertion wasn't fun, but it really wasn't bad. Agree that it is totally worth it.
