Hand wash clothes

I have somehow accumulated a large amount of "hand wash only" tops. From some pretty thick sweaters to blouses. ... I'm the person that just throws everything in the washer on cold and I leave it at that.

How do you hand wash clothes? The sink? The tub? What kind of soap do you use? I don't have a laundry room sink (and never understood them till now)

Any advice is appreciated. The pile is growing lol

ETA: edited for late night typos :)

Re: Hand wash clothes

  • I have a hand-wash cycle on my washer that I put them on.

  • I have always been told to put them in the washing machine on the gentle/delicates cycle with cold water. Never had any problems.

  • I also have a hand wash cycle on my washer. I put one item of clothing in at a time and put very little detergent in. They stack up over here too though because I like to make sure I have time to take the clothes out as soon as they finish the cycle.

I usually do this too, except it backfired on me with my one and only cashmere sweater. The sweater shrank, and shrank quite a bit, it's so short now, I'm so glad I got it on clearance at Target instead of paying full price, because I'd be even more mad if a $50 sweater got ruined, heck I'm still mad that I ruined it at $12. I've hand washed bras before, and usually I just did them in the bathroom sink with a little bit of woolite, like the smallest bottle they have and use a half capful.

    This.

Although, I have washed bras and the random shirt or sweater in the sink when I didn't have enough delicates to warrant a whole load. I also have those mesh lingerie bags that I use even in the delicate cycle if the garment has beading or lace or something.

  • Oh! clothes!! I was honestly confused by the title. I was like uhhh..I have wash cloths why are so many people responding. I do not wash my clothes separate, I guess I am considered a lazy laundry washer.

This just made me lol , hard! Sorry about that. :). I always throw everything in the washer together  too.

I wish our washer had a hand wash cycle. They are an old stackable set.

I didnt think about putting them in on gentle. Do I just lay them out dry?

Yvonne - my mom had a really nice cashmere sweater and she told my step dad " DON'T TOUCH THIS" he has a bad habit of going around the bedroom and just finding any dirty cloths and washing them all together and throwing them all in the dryer on the hottest setting ... Yeah ruined her sweater. She was not a happy camper. She started hiding clothes from him until she was ready to wash them lol

  • I know a bunch have already replied with basically this same answer, but I'm another who just uses the washer's handwash/gentle cycle. My new washer actually doesn't have a separate handwash and separate gentle, they are the same thing. I then hang those things to dry. When we lived in our apartment our washer didn't have a handwash setting, so I washed bras in the sink.

Yes. Or hang them over the shower rod or on hangers if it is a type of material that won't stretch.

  • I'm so glad you asked this question. I have one sweater that says hand wash only that I've never washed. I went shopping with my brother's gf the day of my bridal shower (yes, almost 3 years ago) and paid $100 for only two items of clothing, one being the sweater. Because I paid good money for it, I'm scared to wash it and so haven't warn it in awhile.
