tell me this is a bad idea
There is a Festival of Races near me in two weeks. Had been planning to do the10k (with ease) until I tried to register and learned there is only a full, half and 5k. ???? I have 5 friends running the half and they're all trying to get me to do it too. I have been running for years. Several full and half marathons under my belt and far too many 5, 10 and 25ks to count. Lately the most I've run at one time is 7 miles. I know the whole 'don't increase your distance more than 10%, yadda yadda, but there is part of me that thinks I can do the half. stupid, right? I'm really not interested in only doing the 5k when everyone else is doing the half. I'd rather just cheer them on along the route and not run at all. I do a 5k 3 times a week in my sub so that's not a challenge. so, for all you experienced runners, someone please tell me this is a really bad idea before I have the worst day ever.

Re: tell me this is a bad idea
When is your last half/full?
I'd say your probably fine to do the half, just perhaps not at a PR pace.
Good luck!
oh, no PR expected. Just want to finish without dying.
it's been a while since my last half. last year sometime.
I'd say if the 10k was going to be easy and you've done several halfs and 25ks, you'll be just fine. Have fun, and let us know how it went!
Will it kill you? Probably not. Can you finish? Probably.
I wouldn't do it. Just race the 5K. If a 5K isn't challenging you aren't pushing yourself hard enough.
My home office. Joeyzlovieg's hubby made it for me. I love it!
I've heard of worse ideas. A friend of mine ran a full marathon on a 15 mile long run.
In this case, I'd probably bust my butt for a kickass 5K and then cheer for my friends. I hate being at a race and not participating!

for me, it depends on the race. i love spectating marathons and longer events (like ironmen)...i am always so glad i am not participating, HA!
OP - you said you dont find the 5K challenging. In that case, you are not running them fast enough. The entire 5K should feel like the last 3 miles of that half marathon. It should be hard. If its not hard, you need to run them faster!!
I would much rather PR in a shorter event, than do an event that I am not trained properly for. But that is just me...I take my races pretty seriously since I pay them to do them. But do I think you can finish a half? of course, especially if you are okay with walking if needed.
Sorry to post and 'run' (pun intended). When I said it wasn't challenging I meant the distance. I ran 6 tonight after work just for exercise. I would definitely run the 5k for a PR if I do it. I may have found someone to do the half relay which will be the best answer. She's still deciding though.
Thanks ladies!
