Hi there!
I am pretty sure there are a couple IN currently in SA and I have a few questions.
DH and I are taking a trip there in June/July. I'll be there for two weeks while DH stays for 3 extra weeks to see family & friends. My 2 weeks will be spent entirely in SA and I'm wondering what are some nice, not so touristy things to do. We'll have a few days in joburg, Durban and cape town that are open. I understand that the weather won't be the greatest but we could only afford to go at that time.
Any advice would be appreciated
thanks!

Re: South Africa
My DH is from Durban, I have been there a couple of times. Even in July the weather is quite lovely because Durban is so temperate. It like Florida weather even in the winter. Once you go up in higher elevations more in land it will feel even more chilly in the mornings, but warms up quite well.
As for things to do, Um the World Cup Stadium is worth visiting and going up to the top and seeing the view is worth it. Do it on a calm day as you won't be allow up on a windy day. The beachfront in my opinion is meh. As part of it is really dodgy and the other end has a casino, just looks like any other beach front to me in a big city.
There are really good restaurants and cafes on Florida Street.
If you actually want to go to the beach and have a beach day if the weather feels like beach weather, Scottborough is lovely. It's about 30 miles south of Durban The inlaws have a flat there and we went to the beach in July and somedays were gorgeous for the beach. Not foreign touristy at all, and since it will be out of season a good time to go.
As for Jo'burg, I recommend the apartheid museum as a must. And the theme park across the way has a ticket to go down a goldmine, which to me was pretty cool as that is also so much apart of its history. You don't have to do the theme park if you don't want to just the mine.
Our visits are mainly just seeing family so I haven't done much, but I would drive from Jo'burg to Durban as oppose to flying so you can see the Drakensburgs. There is an old road that you can take that is not the major motorway just a two-lane highway and you can really take in the scenery. That is if you have the time.
Hi! I'm in Cape Town.
I haven't done much traveling outside of the Western Cape, but I can provide some suggestions for around these parts.
In Cape Town:
township tours (of poorer areas) - they seem a little voyeuristic, but it's really interesting and the money goes to the communities
hike up Lion's Head - right next to table mountain, beautiful views of the city. if there's a full moon while you're here, everyone hikes up there on those nights.
Biscuit Mill Market - every Saturday morning in the Woodstock neighborhood. A bunch of excellent food vendors and some clothing/gift sellers. it's packed with hipsters nursing hangovers and families - but it's a great place to have breakfast or lunch on a sat morn.
Also, the Red City Buses (hop on/hop off) give good tours, especially the one to Chapman's Peak.
Around CT:
Garden Route along the southern coast is pretty and has a lot of cute towns to stop in.
Hermanus - cute town outside of CT - can usually spot some whales off the coast
Little Karoo - game parks and interesting towns - the landscape is fantastic
That's all I can think of for now. If you have more questions or want more info send me a PM!
Cool! Thanks everyone. I'm jotting these down for later use. We'll be with my sister-in-law and her husband most of the time but I'm hoping that DH and I will be able to venture on our own a bit.
I do know we're doing the Drakkensburg even though we're flying from Joburg to Durban and then flying Durban to Cape Town. Mainly chose flying because of time restrictions with me only being able to stay 2 weeks.
