My husband and I are thinking of joining, although we wouldn't be able to work out together because of our two young kids. He is 30-40lbs overweight and I am the same since having our daughter 10 months ago. Is this something a beginner could do? Or someone just getting back into working out after a year off? Any tips for beginners? I have been checking out the website for our local crossfit and the photos of the members are a little intimidating.

Yes, CrossFit can be scaled for beginners. Most places have an OnRamp program that will be a few weeks and teach you all the basic moves. Once you move into full classes, every move can be scaled to make it work with your ability level.
Most places will let you do a trial class before you commit. I would definitely do that.
I also would look around and try out a few different boxes if you can. They can have very different vibes and crowds, so finding one that works for you is important. My box is much more laid-back than some--we have lots of couples who work out together, and kids are welcome to come and stay in a designated area during WODs.
Keep in mind that most boxes have people of all ability levels and body types, but of course they're going to put the super in-shape people in their marketing material. That doesn't mean that more "normal-looking" people don't go, though. The class I go to most mornings has everything from super in-shape firefighters to people trying to lose 100+ pounds to pregnant women like me (and everything in between). A good CF coach should be able to cater to all fitness levels.

We have people of all shapes, sizes, and ages at our box and everyone is making measurable progress.
Workouts can always be scaled.

I agree with everything that's been said. I would also add that if you haven't worked out in awhile, don't get frustrated or embarassed if you can't work out at the same level as others! You will get there in time. Everyone was a beginner at one point!
I agree with everything that PP have said. But most especially with the part about not being intimidated. My CrossFit instructor likes to say, "CrossFit is for everyone, but not everyone is for CrossFit." I would check for a box that lets you do the On Ramp or Fundamentals classes and let's you try it out to see what you're getting yourself into!
Just remember that everything is scalable to your abilities and don't push yourself to do more than you're capable of and you will have a great time.
